Cat hip pain

On Sunday i noticed my one of cats was walking with a bit of a stiff leg and she was also making some strange sounds, growing and loud meows. She had clearly hurt herself somehow, i hadn't noticed a limp or anything before this.

So i get a vet appointment for Tuesday and the vet feels around and the pain point seems to be her hip. no noticeable wounds, seven years old and healthy otherwise so vet thought arthritis or similarr unlikely.

She gave me Meloxicam and said if she's not looking better after a week come back for sedation and xray. well it's only been 3 days but the limp seems worse rather than better so i think i will book her in sooner rather than later.

In the mean time i'm worrying my head off about what it could be. what kind of thing could start small and get worse even on pain killers and anti inflamatory? could it be a fracture? arghh my poor baby cat :(

I don’t want to alarm you, but many years ago I had a similar situation with one of my cats. He had an x-ray and had broken the head of his femur. As I recall there was no real treatment apart from pain relief and restricting his movements. He went on to live a healthy and happy life until one day he just disappeared (think he’d stowed away in a mover’s van! So I would definitely recommend taking her back to the vet if she doesn’t improve quickly.

yes i am thinking it may be something like that now and she will be gong back to the vets. i'm glad yours recovered well and i bet he found somewhere nice to live at the end of his trip in the movers van.

Just had her xrays and the vet is pretty convinced it's bone cancer. i will do the biopsy to confirm but man that sucks. Even if it hasn't spread to her lungs and they remove a leg she still wouldn't have a great life expectancy. Don't know what to do apart from cry for a while.

I’m sorry to hear the vets think that. I don’t have any advice but I’ve just gone through a heartbreak with my boy and it really knocks you. You don’t realise how much you love them until they are ill sometimes.

Just give her lots of treats and cuddles, she will know she’s loved. Fingers crossed for some positive news for you soon.

My poor girl, it is bone cancer and has spread to her lungs so we will be taking her home for a couple of weeks of cuddles.

I'm so kicking myself for not noticing anything sooner. she's such a happy chirpy cat :(

Im so sorry to hear about your lovely girl. Don’t blame yourself, you weren’t to know and cats are incredibly good at hiding pain.

Give her lots of treats and cuddles, she will know she’s loved.

Nothing further to add, other than to say how sorry I am about your cat and don't blame yourself for anything, you couldn't possibly have noticed anything sooner. I know you'll make the most of her next few weeks with you. 💐
