Not my cat...

It all started one late evening when I could hear meowing looked out the back door and there was a cat at the door basically howling. I opened the door and he came in and then left. I then learnt from my neighbour that she sees him a lot as he hangs around having a stand off with her cat.

From then on the cat is now constantly here in my garden. He sunbathes, sleeps and just hangs out here morning, noon and night (presumably not overnight). I've never fed him but over the summer have had my door open and now he comes in my house all the time! I am wondering do I try and find his owner or just accept the situation? He doesn't belong to anyone on our street. Have had a look around and seen a nearby ground floor flat with a cat flap and the owner has a dog so maybe that's why he comes round.

He seems well fed, has a nice coat.

Speak to your local cat rescue and get them to come out and scan, or take to the vet to check for a chip.

If he's well fed and has a decent coat just leave him be. He doesn't sound lost - just obviously has taken a shine to your house.
I'd only be concerned if he was looking skinny, injured etc.

This happened to me earlier this summer. A lovely ginger boy kept coming around. Looked in good condition and neutered so I thought he was a neighbours pet. Put posts up on various FB lost pet groups and asked around the neighbourhood. No takers.

Figured out he was sleeping in a tree in my garden so took him off to the vet to check for microchip. Not chipped and weather was wet so I started letting him in to sleep.
The ginger not my cat is now my cat.
