Planing on getting 2 cats. What do I need to know?

Planning on getting two cats. Will get rescues, ideally kittens

I WFH so always around the house.

I had cats growing up and adored them but I was a child so obviously my parents did most of the actual cat care! I’ve always loved cats but until now it’s never been the right time to get one. But now we are settled and DD is 6 and a real animal lover it seems like a good time.

What do I need to know?

That two of them may work as a tag team and drive you nuts. DSis is having serious regrets of getting two kitten, rather than just the one. If you are getting two I’d maybe adopt older, more settled cats, rather than kittens. Her curtains are shredded, they race around the house chasing each other at 2am etc etc.

Oh how lovely - and your DD will love it! Always best to get two, rather than just one. Get the usual kit - litter trays etc, a bed or two. You will to get them vet checked, chipped etc, and look into pet insurance - expensive but less insanely expensive than the vets bills. Posting pics here is the law btw.

Like humans they are all different. We have two and they are very bonded whilst not coming from the same litter. I'd also be mindful of the exoense:

insurance x 2
food x 2
vet checks and vaccs for two
flea and worm drops for two.
vet fees for two for stuff that isn't covered like teeth
Cat sitting when you are on holiday - same as for 1

I reckon it all works out to about £100pcm per cat.

Oh and prey coming in times two. Twice the number of mice and birds. One of mine brought in a bird's nest last night. In the early days two litter trays to keep clean.

Don't expect them to be best friends.

We have two siblings who are diametrically opposite.

When they were tiny, one would try to initiate play and his sister would have nothing to do with it.
She always demands her own play time.

Our two love each other dearly (I hope !). They will snuggle together and eat together but that's as far as it glows.
There's never been any great interaction between them 😢

Top Tip:
Don't get two identical black kittens . They will grow up into identical black cats who will gaslight into thinking they are each other .
Our female walks with her claws out so we hear her clicking ( she can retract them if she wants )
Our male has started .
We don't know which has walked by or come indoors ( though they enter/leave the cat door differently )
I say "Oh hello you" so as not to mis-name them !

I've never had kittens but they are beautiful little creatures and it is Kitten Season

Our pair are bro/sis and get on fine but always do their own thing . Apart from meals or Dreamies time when they join forces to make an awesome TagTeam Grin

My DH does most of his WFH .
The female cat likes to 'help'
She is the Opposite of Help .

Don't bother with cat beds , they won't use them they will use your bed , sofa , clean wadhung , airing cupboard and anywhere that their fur is the opposite colour.

And of course a box of any size .

Ditto with toys , all the fancy cat toys? nah string , boot laces, balls of paper and tinfoil, ping-pong balls .
If you know anyone that drinks cans of Guinness ask them to save the widget they are mini ping-pong balls .

You will buy lots of different food for them yo try , they will settle one the most expensive/ hardest to get , you will go out and bulk buy it and they will instantly hate it.

Cutest thing ever was our female cat walking about with a bottle top from a carton of milk in her mouth or our male cat cantering up the garden with a magpie feather in his mouth Grin

@70isaLimitNotaTarget identical black cats is great fun. 🤣

That age 2-3 your bonded loving cats may decide they hate each other.
