my old boy is going to be 16 next year. He has some neurological thing going on ( not painful just twitches ). He is starting to show signs of dementia and the meowing is a lot of the time.

But has started on and off not cleaning his bum. Having to change the bed a few times a week as it has smears on it.

It isn’t a mobility thing as he is still jumping up fences and does some weird whole body bend thing to clean himself. So he can defiantly reach that part of himself fine.

my question is to people who had this. Did it start out small every now and then? How did it get worse. Just looking for a heads up of what to expect I guess. The vet agrees we are on a slow downward spiral brain wise with him. So I’m just trying to gauge the future.

Is it that he's not cleaning it, or is it that he's starting to lose control of his bowels?

If he is very fluffy round his bum, would it help if he was clipped, to make it easier for him (or you) to clean him?
Hope it's a temporary thing @Andtheworldwentwhite 🤞

@ricecrispiecakes i think just not cleaning. He goes out to the loo all the time. And he isn’t having accidents yet in the house.

I have two fluffy, young cats neither of whom clean their bums. I cut hair round the back end regularly but they still end up having bum baths in the sink fairly often.
