Kitten not eating cat food

Perry the kitten who is nine weeks old won’t eat catfood. He will drink cat milk he will eat chicken and ham,and toast , if we are eating he will run to us and try to take the food off our plate! I even tried putting cat food on a plate and pretended to eat it but he didn’t want any! Every time the fridge is open he runs to the fridge and meows for food. He has no issue eating human food and is hungry but just won’t eat cat food!
The vet said to reduce his milk intake and gave us new cat food to try but that hasn’t made a difference.
Anyone any idea as to why he’s like this?

Where did you get him from and what was he eating there? How long has he been with you for?

dementedpixie · 12/07/2024 22:56

Dry or wet food?
What brands are you using?

ricecrispiecakes · 12/07/2024 22:57

Stop giving him human food, you'll make him sick.

He needs to be on kitten food, ideally a mix of wet and dry. You can heat it up a bit if he won't eat it, or mix it together.

We got him from a girl off Facebook. Had him nearly 2 weeks. We took him to the vet and he's been checked out and he's healthy. His previous owner said he was eating whiskers. He's 10 weeks old.
We're not feeding him human food. When we are eating he runs to us and tries to take food off our plate, out of our mouths! He has cat milk which he loves, we have given him chicken and ham just to make sure he's eating something but this is a last resort. He hasn't eaten cat food since we got him, he's starving and cries and cries when we're eating or the fridge opens, we've tried different cat food and tuna but nothing works. I've ever put cat food and tuna on a plate and pretended to eat if to see if he would beg but he wasn't interested.

What cat food have you tried?
Applaws do a kitten one which is like shredded chicken but check it says complete and not complementary as they need the taurine
Pets at home does individual tins of it so not expensive to try and they do a dry food too in small bags

AquaFurball · 13/07/2024 02:33

Mix the kitten milk in with the kitten food into a soup and try that

LordSnot · 13/07/2024 03:09

Please stop feeding him ham, it's far too salty.

Try different brands but make sure it's a complete kitten food, not complementary and not for older cats. Cats can be very fussy.

We had a kitten many years ago who was undersized when he came to us and flatly refused to eat cat food. Nothing would persuade him to eat it. He would rather have starved. This would have been in the 80s so not as wide a variety of cat food available back then.
He had human food. Beef, steak, chicken, ham, tinned salmon, bacon etc.
He died aged ten, of renal problems, I think, but it was a long time ago and I can’t be sure. In retrospect I do wonder if the salt in the ham and bacon was a factor.
I would try lots of different cat foods including the high meat content
premium ones to see if you can find one he likes. You might have to mix a bit of human food in with it at first.

He must have eaten something over the last two weeks or he wouldn't be alive, surely?

I know it's hard when they don't eat (been there with one of mine) but please, please don't give him ham and tuna - it's really not good for kittens and can cause all sorts of problems.

If he won't eat Whiskas then there are lots of other brands to try.

Make sure that u r not feeding him off a high sided bowl , it irritates their whiskers something awful . I feed mine on an old fashioned saucer . It's best not to give them human food . Once u give a cat something that he really likes he will always want that and will hold out for it . Pick a cat food to stick with , prepare it , on a saucer or something else flat and then maybe drop a few bits of chicken on the top and maybe mix a bit in with the cat food . Slowly and steadily reduce the amount of chicken that u put in . Or even always put a little bit of fresh chicken on the saucer , just enough to make him eat the cat food . If u can , wean him off human food and keep him of it . If not , just give him a small amount in with the cat food .

What cat food have you tried? Our cat won't wat anything that looks like typical cat food, I've tried lots of brands. He's currently eating untamed and loves it
