Cat pee smell

Every time my cat is unwell, she pees on the carpet or soft furnishings (eg a fabric sofa). Sometimes this happens a few times before I realise she's unwell.

My house absolutely stinks of it. Really acrid. I've done all the cleaning options one can think of (bio hazard trained cleaners etc). I replaced the stair carpet last year after a bad phase.

The vet isn't that helpful. Says it's common.

But what can I do? I cannot afford to replace the sofa and carpets every year.

Are you using a proper pet enzyme spray?

BunchOfTimez · 06/07/2024 22:10

Yes - tried Bactador (biological enzyme cleaner) spray. And another one called Odour Destroyer.

On the floor, it soaks through the underlay to the wooden floor. Similarly on the sofa, I think it goes into the cushions.

Try Dr Beckmann pet spray with the brush on the end. I didn't find that any of them stopped repeat peeing. But it helped the smell. Also check it's not your shoes that smell. I thought my cats had peed in the hall. Until I realised my work shoes absolutely stank, because they'd got wet, and the plastic released ammonia. I couldn't believe it!

If your cushion covers are removable, put puppy pads underneath, to protect the inner cushion.

If it's already soaked right into the cushions and the underlay then no amount of spray will get rid of it IMO.

Some places will dry clean cushions etc. but I have no idea about the cost or whether it would be more hassle than its' worth it it's something the cat does regularly.

Cat wee smell is tough because it soaks into the carpet and underlay, not just the surface. You can, try a pet enzyme cleaner (made specifically for cat urine) and really soak the area so it reaches the underlay, then let it air-dry fully.
