How often to comb/brush?

MrCat is getting older and stiffer (as are we all) and doesn't groom the base of his tail any more. I think he's also missing out the rear fringes of his 'pantaloons', as they seem a bit knotty.

Fortunately MrCat is amenable to bring groomed. But it pulls a lot of fur out, especially from his tail and rear end, so I don't want to over groom him.

How often should I comb or brush MrCat?

Every day, at precisely 8.30pm here. Our boy comes to find me to get brushed, then he gets snacks for his trouble. He absolutely loves it. I have a rubbery brush from Pets at Home and could create a kitten every time with what I remove from it/him.

Yes every day with my 10 yr old it's ridiculous how much comes off

Everyday if he'll tolerate it. Only one of mine needs brushing but he gets a bit over-stimulated after a few minutes, so we do short sessions every evening.

It depends what suits you and your cat best. You can do short grooming sessions every day, or longer sessions once or twice a week. I usually prefer to do a longer session once a week, that works fine for my older cat who was getting 'knotty' around the base of her back. I use a rubber 'zoom groom' type of brush and finish with a steel comb.

I get a lot of fur out of my cats when they are moulting more in spring/summer and a lot less in autumn/winter.

MrCat is very beautiful 😍 look at those little toe beans 🥰

As often as possible, but mine is quite long haired. She chucks up fur balls if I don’t help out. It’s seasonal, though, and there’s a lot less fur now than a couple of months ago.

MrCat accepts your praise as his due.

His minion says "Aw, thanks 🥰"

My previous cat definitely had moulting seasons in spring and autumn. MrCat just sheds all year round. Copiously.

Mine 'ask' to be brushed/combed. It's part of our cuddles. We like the brush glove, and tolerate the flea comb - I sneak the flea check amongst the brushing.

Mine get brushed most days. Essential for the long haired cat that gets mats otherwise, and for the short haired cat it helps cut down on the fur he leaves all over the house.

They both get a thorough deshed from a cat groomer every 3 months, the man works some kind of magic. Could be worth considering if there’s one in your area, a good groomer will know how to handle the cat to minimise any pressure on sore/stiff joints.

Mine taps the brush and looks at me BlushGrin

Mine gets brushed most days as she bitches me out and I tell her how beautiful she is. It’s a process. 😆

@Dilbertian your cat looks like our lovely girl who we sadly said goodbye to earlier this year. I could spend 20 minutes brushing her and then she would drift off in a cloud of hair. I put on a jumper (we’re in Scotland, it’s freezing) the other day that I hadn’t worn since she went to sleep, and burst into tears because it was so covered in white hair.
