Vet charging for consultations for regular prescriptions

I have 2 kittens and for monthly flea and worm medicines the vet wants me to bring them in just so they can write a prescription. This costs over a hundred pounds just for the consultation for them both. Is this normal ? I can weigh them at home and don't see the need. I'm looking to register at a different vet because of it

That's not normal. It's usual for a vet to want to have seen an animal in the recent past (e.g. within either the past year or maybe 6 months), but not every month. However, some flea and worm preventatives are quite expensive. Are you sure that the £100 isn't just for the medicine?

Are they asking you to take them in every time? It might just because they are growing, the vet needs to do regular checks?

In that case I'd look for a new vet!

Mine are seen once a year and then I phone to order flea/wormer and collect it without needing to take my cats in again

Why do they need flea and worm treatment monthly?

That’s not ok. I get tick/flea/heartworm medicine for my dog through my vet. He goes in for an annual physical and we get a 12-month prescription at that time.

My flea treatments are monthly and the wormer is every 6 months. I didn't think that was unusual tbh

The vet advised it monthly till they are 6 months old then every 3 months

My vet charges a £12 admin fee for repeat prescriptions, that's it.

Vets have to see the animal every so often now, before they can prescribe flea treatment. Many vets are doing a free 5 minute consultation for this.

It's a recent rule change from the RCVS.

Not normal. My vet sees my dog annually for a health and vaccination check. I just phone for repeats and and pay a ridiculous amount for the meds

Not normal I have an optional pet club with the surgery for £15 a month where I get monthly flea, every 3 months worming treatment and yearly check up and vaccinations.

i do have to bring them in every 6 months to be weighed and a quick check over to confirm their weight and medication but that’s included in the monthly fee

Yes, but not to see them every time.
I know my dogs are older, but my vet will do a repeat as long as they've seen whichever dogs within the last 12 months.

Why don't you flea and worm them yourself? I have a treatment sent to me three monthly (not from a vet).

@ForGreyKoala I did use over the counter stuff the first time I wormed them but one of my cats got so drowsy I wouldn't use that brand again. I've looked at Panacur but it doesn't kill some species of tapeworm. I've tried to find an online pet prescription service but I can't find one. What do you use ? The vet also told me over the counter stuff might not be strong enough

we have dogs and also foster rescued dogs/puppies when we can, and I never buy flea or worming treatments from a vet as they’re so overpriced.

We’ve rarely had to use flea treatment, but use Effipro, again from online stores, when we need to.

Had to take one dog into the vet for flea tick treatment plus wormer. Vet gave dog bravecto and worm treatment. Wouldn't give me bravecto for the other dog despite her having been spayed there a month previously. But I was allowed a worming dose. The bill was £123. 75 for consultation, 1 bravecto dose and two worm doses. That was painful.
