I thought I had made a room kitten suitable….

… but I haven’t at all.

2 bookcases look lethal and the kitten is finding spaces to get stuck I hadn’t considered - like down the back of radiators.

Not to mention the curtains.

And he is making some questionable jumping decisions in terms of height/landing.

Not sure how to keep him safe. My bedroom would be ok if I moved a few things but one of my children often comes in and kitten would be able to escape. I have wooden open stairs I’d rather he didnt access yet and the hall is open the whole way down to the kitchen/diner.

i don’t feel safe leaving him to it for the night though.

any tips?!

How old is the kitten? If he’s just left his siblings it would be much kinder to have him in with you. Can you do anything to stop your children coming in or are they too young to understand?

Kittyquestions · 02/07/2024 22:07

DS isn’t too young but has no recollection of coming in when it happens, a bit like sleep walking.

I had set aside lounge for the kitten to settle as the room with most space for food water litter tray and play things. I had read to keep them in one room for the first while. But yes he likes cuddles.

Its not his first night but it’s the first day I’m aware of how close he likes being - and how acrobatic/playful he is.

I’m going to end up sleeping down here my sofas are short and uncomfortable.

I used the downstairs loo at night.

Costacoffeeplease · 02/07/2024 22:12

I use a dog cage for small kittens when they’re not being supervised. You just have to make sure you block any larger gaps with towels/bedding.

It needs to be big enough for a litter tray, food etc, but it keeps them safe

Kittyquestions · 02/07/2024 22:20

I feel bad leaving him alone.
That said I’ve left him now to say goodnight to my older child and he’s still asleep on the sofa where I left him. He has played a lot - is there a chance he won’t stir much before morning?

I doubt it tbh

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 03/07/2024 20:26

How was he?

HMTheQueenMuffin · 03/07/2024 20:30

Cough cough.

Cat tax please.

I am very envious of a kitten. We are not in a position to have a kitten as planning to move back to my home country in the next 5 years (24 hour flight). One day...

Is OP still alive or has kitten toppled a heavy bookcase on her?
Will Columbo be able to solve this one?
@Kittyquestions how was kitty? And you? Has the house survived flying claws? 😂

Here’s a pic of one of my foster kittens for you, taken when she was 5 months.

@EmpressaurusDeiGatti , look at that concentration! That just says "Incoming mischief in 3, 2, ...."

Hope your little one is settling in @Kittyquestions .

HMTheQueenMuffin · 03/07/2024 20:38

aaaaahhhhhh.... so cute! What markings!!

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 03/07/2024 21:02

She was adorable! Happily ruling her forever home now.

Kittyquestions · 03/07/2024 21:12

I slept downstairs on the floor. He slept on the sofa, not a peep from him between 10.30pm and 5.30am. Can you swear in the litter corner? I’m fucking knackered!. He has just given my hand a good licking and curled up beside me asleep.

i have made some adjustments to the room but haven’t dismantled the bookcase - I am aware that might be something that doesn’t seem necessary when I’m not sleep deprived.

My ex husband who thinks I’m mad is going to cat sit for a while later in the week.

We had a cat play pen when they were little. It’s only a short time because they grow up super fast.

I just left mine in the bathroom overnight, I definitely wouldn't be sleeping on a sofa for a kitten 😳

We took on a couple of snakes a few years ago, they'd been neglected and one of them was in pretty poor condition. DH and I slept on the settees for 3 nights to keep an eye on it 🤪.

I didn’t think I would @fieldsofbutterflies but he seems so baby like.

Mine is just 12 weeks and he mostly likes to sleep next to me. I have no worries about him waking up to mischief in the night because he likes me to watch his mischief. Summer holidays have just started and I'm being woken up by 5am every morning to watch him play! It's as bad as teaching 5 year old! He's either pawing at me or purring in my neck. The little beast has finally fallen asleep but guarantee if I stand up, he'll follow me!
