I didn’t know there were different types of tabby either! What do you make of my boy?

We need side on pics 😁

PiggieWig · 03/07/2024 02:43

Lol @summeroccupation . Does this help?

I'd call him a mackerel tabby - he seems to have straight stripes rather than curly ones! 😁

Alsonification · 03/07/2024 05:40

I had no idea there were different types of tabbies. Here's my girl. She's 12 years of age and very dainty. Is she a mackerel tabby?

@Alsonification yep she is mackerel too, based on answers to my question. So join the mackerel club!

And mine is quite petite to answer a previous poster. She's a small cat and weighs 3.5kg so I think they definitely run the whole scope of small to chunky monkeys!

@RoseberrryTopping
Thanks a mil. I had no idea this was a thing. And I've had her for 12 years hahaha

Franticbutterfly · 03/07/2024 09:06

She looks like Mog. ♥️

PrimalScreaming · 03/07/2024 09:52

Ours is half Bengal as well @AgathaMystery. He is a massive boy at about 6.5kg. He went for his yearly vaccinations last week and the vet said he was 'extra long'... think it's the Bengal genes. He's mixed with goodness knows what... the local barn cat, I reckon. Vet also said he was built like a tank, but it's all muscle and he's not overweight... said he could actually feel his ribs!

He's definitely an outdoor boy - huge hunting instinct. I've never heard of Mackerel Tabbies before either but it definitely fits him.

So does this make my floof a long hair classic? I always wondered why he doesn't have the lovely tight stripes of your mackerels. You can see his markings more clearly as a kitten, now he's so fluffy it's difficult to make out.
Never knew there were different types, I stupidly thought his tabby gene was just less dominant than other tabby's with more clearly defined stripes. I think I need to go & do some reading!

I can see the whorls on him as a kitten but I have no idea what the name would be. And as for all that floof ... how can you bear not smushing him permanently? 🙀

Tallisker · 03/07/2024 11:25

Love your wall colour @Catsandslippers , what's it called? Gorgeous cat too ☺️

LordSnot · 03/07/2024 11:30

I have a mackerel tabby, a marble tabby, and a ginger tabby. All beautiful!

Catsandslippers · 03/07/2024 11:45

@Tallisker thank you 😸 I believe the colour was a farrow & ball one, stiffkey blue in matte

@Pixiedust1234 sadly he rules this house with an iron fist & smushes are only allowed if pre approved by him. Any attempts otherwise may be tolerated but are often quickly met with violence. It's a tough life being that pretty I guess & his methods work well to keep us in line

Pudmyboy · 03/07/2024 12:52

Loving all the tabby cats! Thanks @Pixiedust1234 for the link, who knew tabbies were so varied!
My late, greatly missed, Pud was a bog standard small tabby, male though had tiny paws! And beautifully soft fur: is that common?
(He had sworls but looked a bit stripy when he curled up to sleep)

Mackerel anyone?

My teeny ginger cat was a mackerel tabby. The enormous dark one was a standard tabby ... they were like chalk and cheese!

My current black cats have classic tabby markings if the light catches them right.

@Franticbutterfly and as if by magic, here she is, in her younger years, next to her pal, Mog

I sau'pal' ... she hates other cats

Ahhh. Just watch the Christmas tree!

RoseberrryTopping · 03/07/2024 15:05

@Catsandslippers at first glance I thought you were describing a tabby shade! 'Oohhh stiffkey blue' sounds exotic, I thought

OP posts:
RoseberrryTopping · 03/07/2024 15:06

@Nicelynicelyjohnson he is mackerel through and through

Awww looks like a tender moment between the two of them.....or was that just before the fur started to fly? Two gorgeous cats though! Like the strong markings on your dark boy especially!

SoupDragon · 03/07/2024 16:02

I think Ginger Cat was grooming Fat Cat. He wasn't entirely happy but she was the boss! FatCat was originally rejected by prospective adopters as he was "too dark". He was a fab cat.
