Cannot get cat to stop scratching carpet on stairs

Help!! Can't get my cat to stop scratching carpet on stairs. Bought a scratching post, he won't use it. Bought a scratching mat, he won't use it. Put masking tape over the stair he scratches the most and put the scratching mat there, he hasn't touched it and he's just moved down to the next stair to scratch. Carpet is getting absolutely ruined. Help please

My cat has been like this lately although not on the stairs which might make this more difficult but I put old door mats made of carpet like material down over the places she was scratching and now she tears the hell out of those. Could try something with the same texture as carpet?

Does he go outside and have plenty of stimulation from you?

We had some success with stapling/nailing carpet to other parts of the house for ours to scratch - could you try that?

You can get a spray by Beaphar to discourage scratching, it smells citrussy but is pet-safe (unlike some essential oils, although you might find certain essential oils that are cat-safe as well as cat-repellent). I got the spray on Amazon.

We used this in areas DCat used to scratch where it was not possible to use the double-sided sticky tape that is also sold to deter scratching (but can't be used on stairs as it's super sticky and would cause a trip).

Is the scratching post something he wants to scratch and sited somewhere he likes scratching?

Over the years my cats have had strong preferences about their preferred texture, height and location of posts.

If you get it wrong they don't touch the post.

Put tin foil on the areas she scratches. Secure with masking tape

Tell him "No" ................................................. (Yeah , that works Grin )

Our male walks past two scratching posts to scratch the sofa . We can sometimes pre-empt him with a "no"
He does a Well you only have to ASK look .

Then he goes for feet .

Stair carpet is going cotton woolly but it was old before they arrived ,

We bought a slanted cat tree and combined with spraying the stairs with Anti-cat scratch has stopped it. We have two slanted and one straight pole scratchers. Got to find out which one your cat prefers.
im in Australia, this what we’ve used.

we got a cheap cardboard slanted scratcher, cats love it.

Still hasn't touched the scratching mat. Tried putting food on it, he eats the food off it and doesn't scratch the mat. Tried citronella oil on every step of the stairs because they're supposed to not like it. Hasn't worked. Getting me down that my lovely first home carpet stairs are getting absolutely wrecked.

My cat hates scratching posts but loves an old coir door mat.

RoobarbAndMustard · 11/06/2024 12:56

Our cats love their scratching post, but also the stair carpet (in fact any carpet) and the leather sofa.

learieonthewildmoor · 11/06/2024 21:58

I had to replace the stair carpet twice in my first cat’s lifetime. It’s super annoying.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 11/06/2024 22:03

Can you lay a sample size piece of carpet over the preferred scratch area? Then it can be replaced when fully murdered, instead of having to repthe whole.stairs carpet.

buffyslayer · 11/06/2024 22:05

Have you tried a cardboard flat scratcher, or even a sisal type doormat? Mine loves those
