Choosing a cattery

We are moving house later this year and I don’t think there is an alternative to putting DCat in a cattery for a few days. We are moving about 90 mins away and have a tiny house which will be chaotic prior to the move - there simply isn’t the option to shut her in a room. We were thinking of driving her to a cattery near to our new home the day before the move (when we’ll have packers in) and then picking her up a couple of days after, when we’ve had some time to unpack in the new house.

She has never been in a cattery or indeed lived anywhere other than our street so there is a lot of change coming her way. I feel anxious about putting her somewhere she may be very unhappy and then bringing her back to an unfamiliar home (albeit one which will be much nicer for her in the long run). But it feels like the lesser of two evils. We don’t have family or friends nearby who can help.

There are lots of catteries in the area we’re moving to, so we are going to go and view some and get a feel. We have largely selected so far by size (assuming smaller will be better for her). We are complete novices - what sort of things should we be looking out for, and what are red flags (beyond the obvious)?

Thanks!

I'll be honest, I've always just picked the nearest one that has availability.

The cats don't care how nice it looks, one of mine spends her whole time hiding under a blanket anyway.
