Preventing tree climbing

This is probably a stupid question but is there any way to stop cats climbing a tree?

There’s a big tree at the end of the garden that our lovely neighbour has just retrieved our cat from. He’d been stuck up there so long he’d peed all down it and he was very distressed, crying loudly. Our neighbours cat got stuck up it a few months back as well. It’s a squirrel hot spot and by a park so they’re either chasing the poor squirrels or hiding from dogs and getting stuck.

Ideally, we’d like to stop them climbing this particularly big tree but the covers/spikes online go all the way round which would impact the squirrels. I could try and put plastic on the fence side which I think is how they’re getting up but I’m worried this means if a dog scares them they’ll be stuck.

Does anyone have any advice? Our cats are rescues that were abandoned outside for months so keeping them in really upsets them but equally I want to keep them safe if I can do that without upsetting the natural order of things.

No idea about stopping them go up (very doubtful) but is there a way to make a ladder or landing strips so they can get down by themselves? You can see similar landing strips in zoos.

I went down the rabbit hole. Those Swiss cats are spoilt 😂

The two images I've posted could be made/extended to a suitable height if you are good at DIY but the basic idea is there.
