Cat scrabbling at bathroom door

Our idiot cat loves running taps, and loves to lie in the sink.
Whenever someone goes into the bathroom he sprints up and tries to get in.
When the door is shut he scrabbles at the carpet/door trying to get in, and is completely destroying them.

He does this at other doors too tbh, but we deal with that by the simple expedient of leaving the doors open.

The carpet could do with replacing generally, not just because of this, but I'm reluctant to spend £££ if he's only going to do the same thing to the new one. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas, short of Amtico-ing the whole house, which I'm reluctant to do.

The door can be dealt with by putting a metal panel on the bottom when we finally replace it I guess.

Photos of dufus cat enclosed. We love him dearly and he's very affectionate and good at catching mice (flies/moths/hair bands) but the carpet thing is a pain.

And yes, we do have a cat fountain.

What happens if you put the cat fountain by the bathroom door, along with a scratch post or something?
