End of life

I have an appointment later today as my DCat is to be PTS. I know its for the best as she has lost her sight and has deteriorated to not eating, falling when walking and just hasn't got any quality of life left.
As I've said I know it's for the best but I feel awful about it.
She's 14 and I've had her from being a small kitten. I've had her longer than I've had my kids, longer than I've known DH.

I known there's nothing to gain from this post I'm just so upset.

I'm so sorry Elmo, I"ve been there 3 times, and it doesn't get any easier.
It is so hard, they see us through the good and bad times.
She's not 'just a cat' as some people think, she's part of the family.
Take care, be kind to yourself.
💐💐

You poor thing. I know how it feels, but you are doing the right thing. She'll be running around in peace with her siblings in cat heaven.
14 is a good age. I lost my last 2 at 11 and 13.
Sending my love.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's always heartbreaking. The only comfort can be knowing you've done the kind thing for your little cat, but I know that doesn't feel like comfort at the time. Will be thinking of you 💐

longtompot · 08/05/2024 11:12

So sorry, it is such a hard thing to do. I would comfort myself in knowing I was doing my best for her so she doesn't suffer. We were too late for one of our cats, something I regret to this day💐

caringcarer · 08/05/2024 11:21

You feel bad because you love your kitty so much. (Heart) You know kitty has no quality of life anymore. (Head). You are being kind to kitty in stopping any suffering. (Head). But it breaks your 💔. Nothing anyone says makes you feel better today. Over time you'll remember kitty with love and fondness and the pain will get less.

DriftingDora · 08/05/2024 11:24

You've loved her, made her happy and cared for her - no owner can do more than this. She can't tell you that herself, but how many cats are there out there who never experience real love and care?

When their health deteriorates so much and life is hard for them and unpleasant, this is the last thing you can do for your friend and it's the right thing. Please don't feel bad or guilty - remember: no more pain or discomfort.

Of course it's heart-breaking - they are a member of your family - but be kind to yourself, OP, you're absolutely doing the right thing when their quality of life has gone.

Take care. You'll remember her with love and she'll always be right there in your heart. 🌻

Thank you all for your kind words x
The vets were very respectful. They did some ink paw prints for me & my children and clipped some fur. I think I will make them into an ornament.

So sorry. I've done it three times now. And it's just awful for us. Although peaceful and dignified for them. Sending hugs.

Oh love. Take care. Often the day after is worse as the shock wears off a bit.

Ink paw prints are amongst my most treasures possessions. What a lovely idea to make an ornament x

I have had cats for just a few weeks, and have gone from not really getting the attachment to animals to loving them with a fierceness that has surprised me. I am so so sorry that you have had to say goodbye. Be gentle with yourself.

AlpineMuesli · 08/05/2024 16:27

We’re close to the same position. It’s wretched as we just keep remembering the dear, sweet little kitten climbing the curtains so many years ago.
So sorry you’re going through it too.

Elmo230885 · 09/05/2024 18:15

It's awful. I keep expecting to see her. My DD(7) is really upset.

So sorry to those that have been through this and are going through this xx

I took my 18 old girl to the vet on Friday and she ended up being PTS. Broke my heart, i wasn't prepared, but it was the kindest thing for her.

Keep seeing her out of the corner of my eye 😢

Thinking you see or hear them is awful isn't it @AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds .

One of mine was a black and white and I couldn't even bear to see the Felix cat food cartoon cat for ages.

They know they are loved, and the grief is the sad price we pay.

Elmo230885 · 11/05/2024 06:55

@AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds really sorry to hear that. I was able to prepare a little, on the morning I just sat in the sun with and cuddled her before we had to go.

So sorry, been there too, end of last year, my old bot pts. Horrible at the time, but now am proud that he had a lovely long happy life and pts feeling loved on my knee. Fellow cat slaves on litter tray so kind and helped a lot. Sending hugs
