I've inherited a kitten and I need some help

How I ended up with a kitten is a very long story so I'll skip that and end on, I've inherited a 9(ish) week old kitten. Very out of the blue. Did an emergency shop and bought a bed, some toys, litter tray, food bowls, cat carrier and a little comforter. Kitten seems happy but wondering if anyone has any must haves, either toys or home stuff, that we should look at?
Basically the best things you bought for your cat.

Part of the problem at the moment is the kitten absolutely stinks. Stale cigarette smoke and dirty litter trays. I want to clean it but everything I've read on line, I just can't imagine holding the cat down to wash it.

We're on the wait list for injections and for a full check up as well.

Any help would be very appreciated

Little Jam. Need to get a better name but this one seems to be sticking.

Awwww bless too cute x

He's gorgeous! You could lengthen his name to Jammy Dodger, then call him Dodger or Dodge. Because you'll be dodging round him a lot when he gets under your feet without you noticing....

I love this.

Jam>Jammy>Jammy Dodger>Artful Dodger>Artie>Arts>Dark Arts

etc

viques · 11/04/2024 11:52

Awwwwww, what a sweetie. I would try to stroke and touch him as much as possible, if he was still with his mum and litter mates he would be getting a lot of sensory input.

AssassinsEyebrow · 11/04/2024 12:07

Oh he's so cute! I like his name lol

Get him used to being combed/brush while he's young...And I'm sure he'll become a lap cat when he gets older too :)

CatamaranViper · 11/04/2024 12:18

He loves being stroked and groomed with a hand brush thing, just prefers to sit next to you rather than on your knee. He will happily cuddle in and he's so gentle with my son as well. He's forever licking everyone and nibbling on fingers which seems affectionate.

He can easily fit on my hand at the moment (and I don't have big hands) so he is very tiny. We have an open kitty litter tray for now as the lidded ones have too high a step for him to get in and out as easily. I know he can probably jump in no bother but I want to keep it as easy as possible for a while.

Ah I was literally thinking that Dodge would be a good name! Not sure DS will let me though 😂

Awww. He's so cute.

'Jam' isn't a bad name if you don't manage to make the change. Could you tell DC that he needs a surname to add 'Dodger'?

His little beans though... he's beautiful. My little fur babies are all grown up now but we adored having them as kittens. Mine love their cardboard scratcher fish. Scratch posts in every room you have a sofa you don't want shredded are a good idea! When he's old enough for cat nip and catnip toys (post 6 months I think) the BAM American strong catnip toys and spray are hugely superior and result in lots of playful fun and then a nice deep sleep!

Ours have a sparkly dangly toy on a stick (a bit like a fishing rod) which is their favourite and we still try and play with them almost every day and they're nearly 2 now. They all love that toy for some reason. They quite like their laser toys too.

MoonWoman69 · 11/04/2024 12:37

Aww little Jam is absolutely adorable! Thank you for being his rescuer!
I was adopted by a little kitten about 2 months ago, she just appeared from nowhere! Despite hundreds of posts on various local SM sites, nobody came forward. We lost our boy Bob after she'd been here three weeks or so.
She had her first season and I didn't realise quite quick enough, so now grandkits are very very imminent! And all have good homes to eventually go to! Which I'm so pleased about.
Try a Feliway plug in, just to chill him out and I'd definitely recommend the feather stick from Pets At Home, mine loves it! Anything crinkly or cat nip based is a go!
Here is Spooky! She's landed on her feet with us, she's truly spoilt!

The nibbling fingers thing IS adorable.

At this size.

Trust me when I say I speak from experience, it'll not be so adorable when he's fully grown and still doing it!

Don't make the mistake I did & let it continue or encourage it because he's just.so.sweet. Without litter mates, he won't learn how to play bite gently so as he gets bigger he will clamp down hard

In short, licking is OK, nibbling is not and you need to rule it out right from the start.

So, annoying update. Apparently Jam has fleas.

Previous owner said he was flea'd & wormed a week before we picked him up. He hasn't been itching, we haven't seen anything, but a friend of a friend managed to spot one and did a comb. He's been to the vets for a treatment but now I'm worried about the house! We've had him nearly 2 weeks. He hasn't been outside and we have no other pets he could have picked them up from so presumably he's always had them?

So, kind cat carers, with cat taken care of, what do I do with the house?
Planning on washing everything fabric that I can but what about carpets? Sofas? Mattresses?

Indorex spray is pretty effective.

Scampuss · 11/04/2024 15:06

Chances are if you're spotting them on him, they're in the house. Indorex spray is good, plus stick a cheap flea collar in your hoover bag to kill any you hoover up. You don't need to wash everything. If kitten has had a spot on any fleas that hitch a ride will be killed.

CatamaranViper · 12/04/2024 20:39

I've had a proper shit day today and I have to say, coming home to a hyper kitten who just wants to play was exactly what I needed. He's so lush! Not much for cuddles still but loves to play so I've been sat on the floor with him for the last few hours. Can't feel my arse but worth it

Good luck and there shouldn't be any need to nail trim

Re fleas you'll need to talk to the vet, there might be a pet plan you can sign him up to that includes flea and worm treatments.

Be warned though a lot of flea treatments don't work anymore, the only one I've found that's any good is bravecto.
