Cat 1 week to live

Hi ...
my partners cat is 10 years old
Not been himself for a while .. skin started to yellow & started losing weight.

Vet said today it's liver disease and he has 1 week to live?

Has anyone been through this and is that normal prognosis?
It's very quick to hear just a week left?.......

X

I'm so sorry, but if that is really what the vet said, I would PTS rather than wait, to avoid the cat suffering unecessary distress and pain Flowers

Thankyou. I totally agree on PTS
But I don't dare say it to him as he's so so touchy and sad about it I don't want to say the wrong thing xxxx

Unfortunately cats are really good at making pain - by the time it shows, there's often something really wrong 🥺

I'm sorry, it's so shit.

The cat is probably already suffering.
You must try to talk to your boyfriend about PTS.

This happened to my Baby in September. I took her to the vet as she was yellow and they said liver tumour. We made a date for a weeks time to say goodnight. However I woke up the next day and decided I couldn't let her potentially suffer for a week so I went in a few hours later. It was horrendous, she was born on my bed 10 years previously. We were so close. But I had to do it for her. Thinking of you OP.

Bless you Thankyou xx
I personally feel you acted in pure love saying goodnight sooner. You were selfless. Well done honestly. This kitty is my boyfriend's.. I'll try talk to him tomorrow. He's extreme emotional & snapping at me he's hurting that's what it is xx

I'm sorry to hear about the poor cat. Very surprised though that the vet didn't suggest euthanasia? Did the vet not tell him that the cat must be suffering?

Hiya
I didn't go to the vet with him so maybe the vet did suggest that. I think he's booked it for next week. Personally I think he's kept the cat a week to say goodbye. Wouldn't have been my choice, but it's his cat he has the bond I suppose....he has 3 cats. He's a real cat man lol x

I'd be very surprised if the vet didn't say that. I also have 3 cats and have had cats my whole life. I know how he must be feeling but he does need to consider whether the poor pet is in pain, unfortunately...

I had a cat years ago that had kidney failure and I kept holding out, but on the morning he couldn't lift his head, I knew it was time. The vet had warned me it would be bad, and I loved him too much to put him through that x

I totally agree with you. I'd of done the same if I was you. When this one has gone will it affect the other cats do you think? I've heard when one goes the others follow with a broken heart? He'll have 2 left.
I'm actually worried as these cats are his life. My partner has totally closed off won't even speak to me x

I'd just say to him "are you sure kitty isn't in pain because cats are very good at masking pain". And also "he needs to do what is right by the cat and not think of his own feelings" . I'd also ask what will he do if Kitty takes a bad turn over Easter - is the vet on call for PTS ?

Friends of mine had booked a PTS date then had to to do an emergency dash to vet for PTS as cat took very ill suddenly. It was very traumatic and I know my friend said her partner was very upset he'd left it to get to that stage as cat was clearly suffering at the end (like you it was his cat not hers). Just plant the seed that he shouldn't wait.
I get it's a terrible situation to be in but he's being very selfish and not thinking of the cats welfare - I'd be annoyed with him personally. Plus closing down and refusing to talk would piss me off too - it isn't a good sign of an emotionally healthy person.

As for the remaining cats, yes they might grieve but with 2 left they should be OK, assuming they get on. Dying of a broken heart is a bit dramatic and pretty unlikely in cats, though an only cat could get lonely (not always, some are fine).

Again I agree with everything you've said. He is very selfish. Not just with his animals. Yesterday, he told me the cat means much more to him than I do!

He has 2 Devon Rex alien looking cats that are indoor cats. This cat that is poorly is a normal black cat. He's 10 years old and he's never been outside in his life. Not even in the garden. I don't know if that's normal. But yeah he pisses me off if I'm honest. He's a selfish narrow minded bastard. Xx

Maybe time to leave him to his cats?

It's quite ok to keep them indoors though. My three are, even though they had all been used to being outdoors. They have shown no interest in going out since I got them. They know when they've got it good!

Hope you can talk some sense into your partner but he doesn't sound too receptive! Poor cat x
