Do your cats react to people at the door?

We have a Ring doorbell so it chimes whenever it catches people walking to/from the front door. My kittens come charging every time they hear either the motion chime or when someone presses the button. They'll run towards the front door, do a U turn and go halfway up the stairs where they have a good view of whatever is going on 🤣 The dog is not bothered at all which makes it even funnier.

He runs and hides. He doesn't like many people.

CheekyAquaBeaker · 07/03/2024 17:43

Yes! And the same if they hear a Ring doorbell on TV

Aquamarine1029 · 07/03/2024 17:45

I have three cats. Two of them make quite a show of themselves any time someone comes over. The other won't be seen for dust. She hides as though monsters have invaded the house.

Snozzlemaid · 07/03/2024 18:03

Yes. Our cat jumps up when the motion sense sound goes off and if it's anyone other than the 4 of us she will leg it up the stairs to hide.
She somehow knows if it's one of us though and will just sit and look at the door waiting for us to come in.
I've no idea why she runs away as she's not scared of other people and is happy to be around visitors.

One of ours growls everytime the doorbell goes!

Its odd because she’s actually very friendly to everyone once they’re in.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 07/03/2024 18:17

I had one foster who would hide, a couple who would dash to see who it was & others who would act loftily uninterested.

ParrotParrot · 07/03/2024 18:18

Nope

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 07/03/2024 18:41

The oldest doesn't care.
The middle one reacts to knocking (and runs and hides on the fridge) but doesn't do anything if we use our keys.
The kitten will run off but stay in the room to see who it is. If it's someone he knows he'll come and say hello, if not he'll hide behind the wood burner.

Henry (almost 6) is terrified of strangers, so doesn't like people at the door.
Ruby (11) loves a fuss and flirt so will come to the door with me.
Orson (almost 6, litter mates with Henry) is indifferent to the world, so cares not a jot what is happening if it does not directly affect him.

I live in a flat. If someone buzzes the intercom to be let in downstairs, he'll perk up and watch carefully to see if someone knocks on my door. If someone actually does knock he'll bolt towards the front door, meowing his head off. I have to shut him in the sitting room, which has glass in the doors. So he sits there on the other side staring at us, meowing plaintively at the visitor. doing his best 'sad neglected cat' routine. I've had lots of nice chats with Amazon or supermarket delivery people about their own cats and many of them tell me to let him out for strokes and pats!

When I've been out, my neighbours have told me they hear him meowing when they are letting themselves in their front door, which is right next to mine. If he hears their key in the lock I assume he thinks its me coming home.

He's very very friendly, loves meeting new people and adores a fuss!

Shiveringinthecountry · 07/03/2024 20:09

Mine leaps up and runs upstairs 🙀

Toddlerteaplease · 07/03/2024 21:01

Cheddar comes running down stairs. She's nosey and loves people. Penelope sits on the top step, peering round the corner, until she's decided it's ok. Then she might come down.

TroysMammy · 07/03/2024 21:23

Haribo is petrified when the doorbell goes. He then believes there is a stranger in the house and he's on edge for ages.

My parents had a nasty Siamese who would growl and run to the door when the doorbell went and had to be locked in another room or he would attack anyone, visitor or family he wasn't choosy just vicious. He was a bloody awful cat and I hated him and the feeling was mutual. He frightened the shit out of visitors. My Mother has a somewhat rosy but misguided view of William.

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 07/03/2024 21:56

My cat can hear someone approaching. He knows the sound of a van door closing means a delivery and that someone will knock. He runs and hides. 🐈‍⬛

JoanOgden · 07/03/2024 22:01

Yes, at the sound of the doorbell she legs it upstairs and under my bed as if the Hounds of Hell were at her heels.

SgtJuneAckland · 07/03/2024 22:04

Yep, he runs to the door to greet visitors and every time I open the front door he's sat right in front of it waiting for me because he's heard my keys in the lock

Pudmyboy · 07/03/2024 22:05

My Pud would scarper upstairs if there was a knock on the door, but whenever I came home after work he would be on the mat in the hallway waiting to greet me. He would then turn around, stick his bum in the air with his tail over his back, and claw the carpet. I always thought he was showing me his bum hole so I understood my place in the pecking order. How I miss him!

Galaxyinmypocket · 07/03/2024 22:11

Yes, my female house cat growls and races to the door like a dog. She rules the roost here, even the dog is afraid of her. She is loving and sweet but very feisty

maudelovesharold · 07/03/2024 22:21

My boy would fit right in on MN! If the doorbell goes or anyone knocks on the door, he looks alarmed and makes himself scarce, and most certainly isn’t ever ‘visitor ready’!

Justabadwife · 07/03/2024 22:29

He growls. It's so funny cos he's the most placid cat ever. Yet there he is acting like a dog every time the door goes 😂

Copen · 08/03/2024 07:16

She goes flying up the stairs at the speed of light to hide under the bed if the doorbell goes. Then if it's a visitor who is stopping, after an hour there is lots of plaintive mewing at the top of the stairs so I have to reassure her it's ok to come down and socialise.

On the other hand if she hears keys in the door, she goes for a meet and greet.

Canthave2manycats · 08/03/2024 17:28

Gracie knows if a car comes into our drive that it could be one of our family, and runs to meet them. She never gets mixed up with next door! She has never been outside our house. Sadie perches at the top of the stairs and surveys them, but generally doesn't come down. Teddy will be found on the arm of the sofa nearest the door if anyone comes in or even leaves the room!

GMH1974 · 08/03/2024 17:34

Mine growls.
