Long story short, stbxh is collecting his old girl cat at the end of March. I have a 5 year old boy cat who has known her all his life. They're not snuggly, but he likes to chase and play with her and just be near her. He likes company and is a bit sad on his own.

I have no control over any of this, but what can I do to make things easier on him? Getting another cat isn't an option at the moment but definitely something I'm going to do further down the line.

Hi.
I think you might be surprised.
We had 2 sister cats.
When the first one died at 20 years old, I thought the other one would be devastated.Amazingly she came into her own, was much livelier and happy.
The one that died was a tiny little thing the runt of the litter.
Her sister was enormous !

My sister had two cats. When one died, the other one really came into his own! He was so much happier as an only! Sadly he had to be pts earlier this week, poor wee man.

I hope your boy doesn't miss her too much x

Thank you. I'm so worried for my sensitive little guy.

Maybe you will have to think about getting him a friend? It's a bit cruel of your ex to separate them?!

Like I said, I will do this further down the line but I just can't right now.

Ours seems just as happy tbh. They were a sibling set also, but had ignored each other or wound each other up the last few years. She died around 6 months ago from a Tumor. Boy cat seems less jumpy and more settled. He’s 6 years. We won’t get him another

Mothership4two · 23/02/2024 06:13

I have had six cats as an adult (not all together) and not one of them showed any concern when their pal or sibling shuffled off this mortal coil - I don't think cats are hard wired like that.

Think long and hard before introducing another cat to your tom as it is unlikely that they will be friendly and will probably see each other as rivals. I think young cats may buddy up but not older established cats. Your home may become a war zone.

Thank you, good advice. My boy is as soft and stupid as they come and loves other cats but I'll be treading carefully when I'm in a position to get another.
