Cat Under the Weather

Our cat (11yo) has been a bit off his food the past week or so, still eating but not his usual amounts, we thought he might be getting fed elsewhere! Over the weekend we noticed he has a lump/swelling in his belly pouch. Last night he was sick a couple of times and he's now just sleeping and seems a bit miserable. Will be ringing the vets today so just looking for a bit of a handhold.

How did he get on OP?

EdithGrantham · 19/02/2024 22:15

The lump is just where he's fat 😳 But he has got inflamed kidneys so is on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory and we're to keep an eye on how much he's drinking in case he starts to develop kidney problems more regularly. So not as much to worry about for now as I thought but the kidney problems might be in the future, hopefully if we get him to lose some weight that'll help 🤞

Just an update to say he went downhill again at the weekend so he's been in the vets this week on a drip, the vet thinks it might be acute kidney failure which doesn't have a great prognosis. He's on a drip again tomorrow and Friday and if he hasn't stabilised by end of day Friday they've said there's not much they can do 😔

Oh no I’m so sorry OP 😞 Thinking of you and your lovely kitty and hoping he gets better! Xxxxx

Thanks, I was really optimistic this morning as he seemed so bright and happy but the vet didn't seem very positive when we went to pick him up this evening

Sending hugs

Hope he's ok 😻

So he has acute kidney disease and the vets can't do any more for him. We have him at home and it's now just a matter of waiting until it gets to the point we have to have him PTS. The vet said whilst he's still eating and drinking and seems content then he won't be suffering. He has accepted a fuss off us today and has drank a little bit but hasn't eaten anything since yesterday morning so I don't think it's going to be long. I'm hoping to get to Monday but we'll have to keep monitoring him. I'm not sure how many days is "ok" for him not to eat at all?

Sorry to hear this. You will know when it's time.

PieonaBarm · 09/03/2024 14:09

When we knew our dog was in his last days we just fed him what we could get him to eat, which was lily's kitchen treats, Pom bears and pork pies. Just feed kitty whatever you can get them to have. Hugs OP xxx

Oh no so sorry to hear that, bless him

EdithGrantham · 09/03/2024 17:05

We couldn't tempt him with anything and he also stopped drinking and was losing the use of his back legs so we made the heartbreaking decision to have him PTS this afternoon. The vets did a nose and paw print and a little vial of his fur for us. We've brought him home to bury him in the back garden tomorrow.

Oh I’m sorry to hear that. Poor baby. It’s a heartbreaking choice to make, but it was the right one.

PieonaBarm · 09/03/2024 18:38

Oh OP it's the hardest decision to make but you did the right thing for him. He had a fantastic life with you all try and remember him full of life. Tell us about him if it helps xx

EdithGrantham · 09/03/2024 19:37

Thanks both, we've been talking about all his funny quirks this afternoon. Can't really believe that he's gone, every time I go into a different room I just expect to see him there in his favourite spots

Better that way, he’s out of any further suffering. Although it doesn’t feel like it now
