Save my carpets!

My two gorgeous cats love scratching the carpet on the bottom steps, and the way our stairs go we have three sections on the stair case and they are completely pulling out the carpet. We put a towel down on each of the steps to stop this but it's not a long term solution so any advice ?

Do they have plenty of scratchers? My cats have many , in different shapes and different rooms to remove the temptation to scratch everything.

Otherwise, some sort of spray with an odor they dislike.

It's really important that cats have the ability to leave their scent around the house and scratching is a key way for them to do that.

Do you have lots of cat furniture, scratch posts and houses etc. for them?

Sadly some cats just love carpets. I have loads of scratching posts, mats and blocks around and even have a couple of those cardboard scratchers attached to the wall in Tobias's (and was Boycat's) favorite wallpaper destruction area.

But Tobias still attacks the carpet especially on the stairs. He does use the various "official" scratching things but as well rather than instead of. I think I could fill every room with stuff for him to use, and he would be very grateful, use them & still kill the carpet & wallpaper

Try a scratcher near it and put cat nip on it so it seems extra appealing. You can put orange peel or buy and orange spray to discourage them from the area you want them away from.
