Cat in hospital :’-(

Our cat is currently in the overnight animal hospital. He developed blood in his poo and has a clear, odourless liquid coming from his bottom which is sometimes streaked with blood. He then also vomited and stopped eating. We’re waiting for blood test results, vet said it could just be a bad case of gastritis, possibly a blockage of some kind but can’t say for sure yet.
Once his bloods come back, they’ll decide whether he needs an ultrasound to check his tummy.
Has anyone experienced these symptoms in their cat, what was the outcome? I feel so sad that he is so miserable in hospital, he’s such a nervous boy, but he needed fluids as he was dehydrated. He’s a rescue cat, around 10 years old, we’ve had him for 7 years. Before we had him he was on the streets. Just so sad that he’s unwell and wanted to vent a bit :(

No idea of source of medical problems just sending you hugs 🌷🌸🌷

Aww I'm so sorry to hear he's unwell, but he's in the best place and I'm sure they will do all they can to make him better.

I don't have any experience of his problems (touch wood), but I worry that my girl (14) will get ill sooner or later and dreading it.

Keep us posted on how he's doing. I'll be thinking of him 🐱

I'm really sorry your cat is unwell OP. Poor wee lad. Sending positive vibes and I hope he's home with you soon

One of my boy cats had a similar thing when he was little. The clear liquid was at times almost jellyish with streaks of blood.

The vet thought it was colitis, gave him some medication and after a couple of weeks he was fine. Touch wood, he hasn't had it since and this was about 6 years ago.

Try not to panic too much, easier said than done I know. It may be perfectly treatable. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you both.

thanks so much everyone 🥹 it’s been a really tough week for us and our kitty being in hospital is just the icing on the shitty cake 🙁
@RumNotRun yes the first vet we saw mentioned colitis and gave us special bland food, and some different medications to try. But then he seemed to get slightly worse. Not sure if that might just be the natural course of a bout of colitis/gastro, I’m hoping that’s the case. There’s not much info online about the odourless fluid.. but reassuring to hear that your kitten recovered! Seems like quite a long-ish recovery of two weeks. Maybe things will be ok. Thank you for replying x

No advice sorry but stay positive. Your boy is getting the best care and cats can be very determined to get better!
Sending you positive thoughts, please keep us updated 💐

How's he doing?

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 31/01/2024 15:57

My friends cat had similar - when we were looking after her as they were on holiday! Sent my friend a photo she said she's had it before. A sort of colitis type thing. Wasn't too bad and she's fine now about 2 years on. Hopefully yours will be ok.

Thanks so much for your replies everyone! So he’s doing well today, we were allowed to go and visit him for half an hour and he was so happy to see us. He’s not pooped or vomited since he’s been there (although he is being given anti sickness meds). His abdominal scan came back clear apart from some thickened intestine walls and slight enlarged pancreas but the vet said these aren’t significant findings. So all signs point to colitis/ inflammation , but when he poops they are going to take a sample to rule out any infections. He’s staying in for tonight just for more fluids and monitoring.

He’s such a nervous boy so we are going to make extra effort to make him some quiet places when he’s home and also consider some anti anxiety meds for him (he’s a fur puller!) he looked good today but had a bandage on one leg for his drip and it really tugged at my heartstrings!! 🥹

Cant wait to have him home although it might be a while before he forgives me for abandoning him for two days 😁

@MagnoliatheMagnificent thank you for that! I think I was freaking out because I wondered how on earth the blood and fluid could be normal , it seems so severe! But it’s good to hear that the kitten made a full recovery!

Oh that's all good news. I'm sure he'll forgive you.... eventually 😁🐾😸😻 (only joking - he'll be delighted by to be home with you)
