Bedside Crib For Cats?

This is going to sound ridiculous I know, but I adopted two large cats before Christmas and they want to sleep on the bed with us every night but also with each other. In practice this means they either form a solid ball of cat in the middle of my side of the bed or wedge themselves either side of my legs so I can’t turn over. They are both around 5-6 kgs so hard to move.

I was wondering if anyone had used a bedside crib and got cats to sleep next to them in it rather than hogging the bed! My husband thinks they would ignore it as cats do with most beds. I could get a second hand one very cheaply on Facebook Marketplace and wondered if it was worth trying.

If you try it I'd love to know if they use it. We have 4 cats and the 2 biggest are bed hogs!

Evenstar · 27/01/2024 14:21

They woke me up three times last night 😴

You know they won't use it, right?

Sallysoup · 27/01/2024 14:29

The fact you want them to use it pretty much guarantees they won't go near it 😅.

amylou8 · 27/01/2024 14:30

Put a small electric heat pad in there and I bet they'll claim it as their own pretty quickly.

ArnieLinson · 27/01/2024 14:30

My cat has beds all over the house. She uses them all. But at night, in the middle of the night when it gets cold, she sleeps on my shoulders with her head on mine.

she has a radiator bed, a large flat dog bed, a dog bed, a cat tower, a cat bed and a cat igloo. We have a dog as well. They swap beds all day throughout the day.

Evenstar · 27/01/2024 14:31

@Scampuss well I think it likely they won’t based on many years of cat ownership, and the fact they have their own beds which they seldom use, just wondered if it had worked for anyone.

Mine hog the bed.

I do have a large cat tree next to the bed that they sometimes use.

Otherwise I'd recommend buying a bigger bed.

@YourGoatAteMyFishfinger I have seen secondhand baby ones for £15-20 on FB Marketplace, I saw those and couldn’t believe the cost!

You are absolutely right.

It does sound ridiculous. Just shut them downstairs before you go to bed.

Rubyfw5 · 27/01/2024 14:40

You will have to fool them by pretending it's a container for your clean washing 😼

thelengthspeoplegoto · 27/01/2024 14:44

The heated pad is a good idea. My cat loved her heated igloo. You could put a little catnip in it to start.

WASZPy · 27/01/2024 14:48

Agree your only hope is a heat pad. They are on you for the heat, they are not going to move unless you offer them a better deal.

Mine sleeps between my knees until about 2am when she bats me in the face until I lift the duvet up so she can sleep plastered down my side.

thelengthspeoplegoto · 27/01/2024 14:52

@WASZPy my cat used to do this too. She loved coming under the covers. Totally unhygienic but so cosy!

Toddlerteaplease · 27/01/2024 15:33

What a brilliant idea. Though I do like having kitty cuddles!

Evenstar · 27/01/2024 15:40

We love having them with us and don’t want to shut them out, I will report back if we get one and let you all know if it works 😺

My cat sleeps hogging my pillow with his paws on my head. I love it. I make sure there is room for him x

purpleme12 · 27/01/2024 15:43

God these cats sound cute

RagzRebooted · 27/01/2024 15:46

This is a genius idea, if they take to it! Mine both like to be on the bed, one especially wants to be on me and will move from my lap (in bed reading) to my hip/back if I'm actually trying to sleep. She's tiny, so I barely feel her to be fair. The chonky one will sometimes decide she also wants to be on the bed, but they don't like sharing. Chonk got under the covers this morning for some spooning cuddles.
Luckily DH works away and when he's here he usually sleeps downstairs (with Chonk on his lap) so plenty of bed for me plus cat/s.
When he comes to bed, we do struggle to fit all four of us!

PensionPuzzle · 27/01/2024 15:49

What about the sort that hang on your radiators? Ugly but probably worth it for a good night's sleep 😂

Definitely this is a great idea. You can get microwave bean bags to go under a fleece. I'd think they'd claim it for their own if it was nice a warm and cosy.
