My poor little boy

I've posted a couple of times on here about my beautiful boy Elton. He's a rescue FIV cat and we haven't had him long - 2 1/2 months. He has just had his first full check up and they have found out he has stage 3 kidney failure. He won't live more than a few months more. I am absolutely devastated. He is so beautiful sweet and loving and I will miss him so much

I’m so so sorry, I come into a lot of FIV cats in my volunteering, especially in ex strays. remember you have made his last few months extremely happy, he loves you as much as you love him. Life’s unfair some times, but at least he had another chance to be loved and cared for by you. Sending 🤗 to you both x

Oh my goodness, I can’t not reply to this, it’s made me bawl 😭 what a gorgeous boy. I have 2 FIV boys and they are the most loving, gorgeous things.

Ian our newest, came to us this summer aged 10. He’d been in rescue 6 months as nobody wanted an older FIV cat. They found a heart murmur at his first check that the rescue didn’t pick up or tell us about. Before we took him home me and DH discussed that we may not have long and he may break our hearts but ultimately decided that him remaining in rescue was even sadder so we would commit and what will be will be. We adore him, he is currently cuddling me as I feel ill and one day he WILL break our hearts. But I know that we are giving him the best possible “forever” however short that will be- he is utterly adored and given the best of everything alongside our younger FIV boy. They are the centre of our world and I know however sad we end up, I will never ever regret the love we give them and the love we have received in return, even if we wish they could stay forever. I stop and fuss them every time they ask, I let him wake me by licking my nose every morning and I never mind when they wake us in the night playing- I want them to know they are loved every second.

Elton is SUCH a gorgeous boy and you are giving him the absolute best. He is going to break your heart, but you have given him forever- he knows love and will know love for the rest of his life thanks to you. The alternative of this outcome happening in a rescue or on the streets is so much worse for him. Just love him and let him love you back for every moment you have.

Sending you all the love from me and my FIV boys.

That’s sad news. I am so sorry. But your lovely, handsome boy is lucky to have you because you will make sure every day he has is the best that it possibly can be. Take care of both of you.

Whiskeypowers · 18/01/2024 17:26

Oh no I’m sorry. He’s such a lovely cat, what a sweet face. He will know how much he is loved and when an animal leaves this world that is the greatest gift we can send them on their way with. But I know that you will be heartbroken. Wish the last months you have together are peaceful and special ones ❤️

Pudmyboy · 18/01/2024 17:31

Such sad news yet so many heartwarming stories, the love for these cats shines through. I hope you enjoy every moment of your remaining time with your beautiful cat and know you have given him a wonderful home 💐

Puppylucky · 18/01/2024 18:39

Thank you so much all of you for your lovely messages. It's just so hard to take in as he's in good health at the moment and has settled in so well. I know that he knows he is loved and he gives back so much love. I've never had a cat before,as an adult at least, and this is so difficult. Here's a picture of him pretending to be a pirate cat

I just wanted to thank you for this: it's so true and such a touching post. Since my parents (and wee dog) died not much touches me to the point of tears, but this brought a real lump to my throat ❤️

Cattymonster · 20/01/2024 21:54

I'm so very sorry to read this, OP 😢 There'll be comfort in the knowledge that you've given him a secure and loving home, but I know how these things just break your heart Flowers

TastyLikeARaindrop · 21/01/2024 09:04

Crying at this thread 😢
He is such a handsome boy, op. I'm so sorry he's so poorly. You've given him a wonderful loving home just at the time he really needs it.

Anyone who takes on an older and/or poorly cat knowing that time is limited and heartbreak will happen too soon is an absolute superstar ❤️

Readingthedictionary · 21/01/2024 09:06

I'm so sorry @Puppylucky he's absolutely gorgeous. He has the best owner in you x

Puppylucky · 21/01/2024 11:35

Thank you all for your lovely messages - he is indeed a beautiful boy but I'm not sure I'm such a great owner! I don't have much experience of being a pet owner and I'm finding the whole situation a bit stressful if I'm honest. The latest drama is I think he's got an infection after his tooth extraction last week. His breath smells foul and he's off his food. It's worse because I have had to change his diet to renal friendly products and I don't know if it's that he doesn't like them or it's because his mouth is hurting. I've got a painkiller that the vet prescribed for post surgery but I'm nervous about giving it to him too often due to stress on his kidneys. He's just so miserable at the moment and I can't help him. We're going back to the vet on Tuesday for his post op dental check up and I'm just scared she's going to say everything is getting worse.

LostCats · 21/01/2024 11:57

Puppy really don’t worry. You’re doing really well and being very good to him. Maybe call the vets today and ask? They’ll probably say to give the painkillers or maybe give him antibiotics so he can get back to eating. The renal food isn’t as yummy I know as my older boy didn’t like it but we tried loads of variants and then eventually found that Purina did one and he had always eaten purina. He’s a fussy old devil and likes basically the cheapest food going. Do try loads of renal foods as you will find one which works. The vets also sometimes have small pouches you can try before you buy a big bag
