Injured stray cat

Posting for any advice, please. There's a stray cat who has been visiting the last couple of years (tried to take him in but alas we were not the chosen ones- he prefers to be outside). He's very mistrustful of people and doesn't like being petted.
I've seen him today and he is limping, with an injured back leg and I can see some matted fur on his back which might be a wound. He's not coming for food which is unlike him. Seems to be in bad pain :( can't properly rest on his back legs and the poorly one is shaking. Despite being slower due to this I still can't get anywhere near the poor thing. And I don't have a cat carrier if I did manage to get him. Is this an RSPCA job or a local cat charity one? Do I ring the vet? Please advise, thank you

Contact your local cat rehoming places they are usually very experienced in capturing strays and have vets that provide subsidised treatment.

@thecatneuterer may be able to advise.

Where are you?

fatphalange · 14/01/2024 15:01

Yorkshire

I've been out to try and entice him and he's now nowhere to be seen :(
I left some food out and he hasn't touched it. He's usually a right gannet

Agree with others, contact your local rescues and Cats Protection as they can sometimes supply a trap. Ive had to do this for two cats now. Good luck.

I've also done it's a small local rescue were brilliant. CP were no help at all.

I've contacted my local cat charity. In the meantime I've kept going out looking for him in hopes of taking him to the vet myself as it's upsetting to think of him like this. But I can't see him anywhere now

Most local rescues should have a trap they'll loan out for situations like this. I find the local independent charities better than the big chains.

I really hope you find him. He’s a lucky boy having someone who cares about him. Contacting the local cat charity was a very good idea.

Do you mind me asking, is he black and white? We too have a stray we are looking out for and we haven’t seen him in a few days. We’ve been worried about him.
