Wet food

We are fairly new to cat ownership, we got her as a kitten in August.

We are at a loss about wet food. We started with felix at first which she ate for a bit and then refused. We tried Rosie's kitchen which she outright refused to even try. We tried untamed, she loved the trial pack we had and then refused when we had a months supply delivered.

We've had the most success with Katkin but it's soo expensive and even that she is starting to leave more and more now and as it's so expensive I'm more concerned about wasting it.

We have asked the vet and she wasn't really bothered because she does snack on Burgess dry food throughout the day, never clears the bowl but there'll be a dent.

Do we give up on wet food all together? Are all cats this fussy?

Cats are notoriously fussy Grin

Ours don't really have sensitive stomachs so we switch between several brands depending on what's available and what's on offer. At the moment they're on Sheba though one won't eat the Turkey flavour Hmm

@margotrose I'm literally throwing money in the bin at this rate.

Maybe we'll give Sheba a go. She definitely doesn't like anything in jelly though...

She is spoiled rotten 😆

could she eat mainly dry food with some tuna or other tinned fish?

I once had a cat who never ate wet cat food but survived for many many years on cat biscuits with tinned fish or occasionally fresh

She wasn't a kitten when I got her though

@HolyMoly24 mine will only eat Sheba in gravy, not in jelly Hmm when they were on Felix, they would only eat it in jelly - go figure Grin

My middle cat is 3yo loves to eat the kittens' food if he gets the chance - the very same food we gave him as a kitten and he refused to eat, lol.

My 2 cats like the Aldi cat food in a tin and share 2 X tins a day. It's got a high meat content.

Thanks for the suggestions all, really helpful.

We give her tuna as a treat every now and then and she loves it but my partner told me they aren't supposed to have it every day? Definitely will if we don't have any luck with any other wet food soon though.

It's actually hilarious how finicky cats are

99% of my cat's diet is dry food. She demands a pouch every morning, but it just gets a cursory lick or 2. Occasionally she licks off all the gravy and maybe eats a chunk or 2. That's it. My two ago cat was similar (though she hunted so sorted her own supplementary wet food!). As long as the dry food is complete and water is always available, you don't need to worry.

HolyMoly24 · 10/01/2024 22:50

@Scampuss ah thanks that is really reassuring.

She does drink a decent amount of water from her fountain so maybe she doesn't feel the need for wet food.

My kittens cost me a fortune but are on Applaws kitten food - the chicken one. They love it. They also like the tuna version but will not tolerate the sardine (can’t blame them, it stinks).
It’s not in jelly, you can buy on subscription from Amazon. Really good quality with no added sugars etc.
Orignally they were on felix or whiskers and would barely touch it so although cheap, we were like you and just throwing money in the bin with it.

HolyMoly24 · 10/01/2024 23:06

@SubParbanMum oh I forgot that I had actually looked at that one before on Amazon. I'll have a look again, thank you!

My cat is 7 months.. he ate wet kitten food .. but then stopped at 4 months and only ate dry kitten complete biscuits.. now he won't eat any wet food at all unless it's bits of chicken or fish l give him when I've cooked it.. my Vet said he's fine on dry complete as long as he drinks plenty of water.. which he does.
Yes cats are very very fussy.

Cheddar will lick the gravy off her sisters wet food. But won't touch the meat. My previous two were the same. Although Webox natural was eaten. Penelope adores Sheba fine flakes.
