I’ve had a cat for about 8 years and she’s always been an outdoor cat and done her business in the garden. As the years have gone by she’s quite lazy and hardly goes out but goes out to do her business so we haven’t had litter trays inside for a good 7 years.

last year we got a kitten- all fine, they get along well. Sleep together, don’t fight, eat together etc. couldn’t have been a better match. Whilst the kitten wasn’t allowed out we had the cat flap locked, older cat was let out a few times a day (which she declined a lot anyways because shes lazy) and she was using the litter tray. Our kitten can now go outside so we thought back to usual no litter tray life…..

kitten is going in the garden absolutely fine. Older cat is absolutely not. Keeps pooping on the carpet upstairs. I have tried everything. I have tried repellent sprays, I clean the carpet with enzyme remover, I’ve moved the furniture to cover the area, I put the old litter tray business in one spot in the garden to give her the idea, I’ve tried putting her outside after she eats or if I see her trying to wee/poo in that area, I’ve even moved the food there and she’ll poo next to the food!!!

weirdly she doesn’t seem to pee on the carpet but just poo.

im at my whits end of what else I can try. My last resort is thinking a calming plug in or spray?! Any ideas appreciated

I think your cat is quite clearly telling you she no longer wants to poo outside.

Just give her a litter tray. It's no big deal.
