How do I feed my cat?

This is probably a stupid question. I had cats as a child and my mum would top there dry food up as and when and then give them a pouch of wet food in the evening. My cat now won't eat wet food, so I just top his dry food up as and when the bowl is empty. He is definitely getting chunky. Should I be only feeding him dry food at certain times? Even if he is asking for food out with those times and has an empty bowl?

Maybe get him weighed and get vet advice as to how much you should feed. If he's getting fat then you may need to weigh out his food and give in a few meals per day rather than topping up all the time.

Speak to your vet. We have five cats, some are thin and sleek, some are proper chunky. All are in a healthy weight for their age/build.

Oh and if you need to weight him, here’s a tip - stand on bathroom scales and weigh yourself, then pick up cat and check the difference. So simple but had never occurred to me till a friend suggested it!

The dry food we fed our cat had a guide on it as to grams per day, depending on size of cat (and type of food)
So I would put half down in the morning, and half down in the evening. If he nagged for more inbetween, tough luck - the vet told us he was getting a bit tubby, but by sticking to the guideline amounts, we got it back under control.

All the above.
If he can't self regulate (not all cats can) you will have to weigh his food and only offer the amount that keeps him at a good weight.

That's a really good idea. He won't be impressed but he probably needs me to enforce some self control

I weigh the dry food and feed off the guide
Split it between a few meals and I save some for in his puzzle feeder

Most adult cats get fed morning and evening. Just measure his food out twice a day. Offer a meaty stick at lunch time.

Not all cats can self-regulate so you have to do it for them. I would measure his daily allowance of dry and split it over 2-3 meals.

Ooo he loves a meaty stick!

So I have read the back of the whiskers packet and he is now on the recommended daily amount. He is a bit pissed off about it.
