Why is he doing this?!

4 month old kitten, in the last few days he's suddenly started kneading me with his paws and sucking on my clothes, but he kind of roots around too, it reminds me of a hungry (human) baby searching for the nipple, before he finds a satisfactory part of my jumper to suck on.

It's probably a nice/loving thing but my god it's annoying. I'm usually trying to do something else at the time, like my crochet etc and he just butts right in and won't be put off at all, it's usually right up on my chest too so he plonks his arse down right over my hands!

Because you're his mum and he's seeking comfort.

HappyHamsters · 26/11/2023 22:06

He is a baby, looking for milk, comfort and love.

Comfort. It often happens when they're taken away from their mums too soon, but it can just be one of those things.

Aww I would love this. It's just for comfort I think. My husband's childhood cat used to suck his earlobes.😹

My dcat did this as a kitten as well 😻

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 28/11/2023 20:41

Aww, he loves you. Cats always want you when your busy.

All cats do this right?

It's part of their routine.

Halloumicheeseislife · 28/11/2023 20:51

Our two kittens do this. My clothes end up soaking! They don't do it to anyone else though.

I don't know, I've never had a cat before!

They both make biscuits on us but it's only Fynn that actually sucks too. They've both made loads of snags/loose threads on my Oodie and he likes to suck on those so I'm having to find them all to snip off so he doesn't actually end up swallowing them!

Rest assured that what a cat does no matter how bonkers it appears to us, is totally normal and reasonable.

Isheabastard · 30/11/2023 12:01

Making biscuits is what kittens do to massage the milk from the mother cats nipples, and this behaviour often continues into adulthood when cats are relaxed.

Whether your other cat is suckling because it’s seeking comfort or is relaxed is hard to say.

I would suggest keeping a (plush?) toy or some fabric nearby, and when the kitten comes to you, let the kitten use that toy/fabric to suckle on. I’d try to find something as similar to your Oodie texture as possible, as that seems to hit the spot for Flynn.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/11/2023 12:27

Cheddar makes biscuits on my face. And drools on me. Usually at 3am.

felinelucky · 30/11/2023 12:48

Some cats do it their whole lives. It's when they're feeling cosy.
