My cat opens the occasional package too. I think she suspects dreamies are in every plastic bag. She once ripped open a packet of vitamins and chewed a couple to check the powder in them wasn’t delicious.

They just hate not knowing something imo

My DDs cat has to investigate every box, bag or basket and usually claims them for hours. Mine was never interested as she preferred laps.

It seems you have a little rascal who likes getting into mischief 😂

I remember not long after Boycat & Girlcat came home I was woken by thumping noises in the night, didn't think anything of it & went back to sleep. Came down in the morning & couldn't see Boycat until I looked behind the sofa.

He'd managed to get his head and one arm stuck through the looks of an Asda Bag for Life, and as cat who was scared of most things & had "issues" at the best of times he was terrified. I had to pull the sofa out, grab cat (who hadn't yet got to the stage of trusting me enough for stroking) & cut the handle of the bag to get it off him. That was when I started to shut them out of the kitchen at night.

Although cats can defend themselves (we all know the damage of cat bites and scratches on us), they are actually quite weak when it comes to other animals they could meet outside. Eg Badgers, dogs etc. many of these animals have very powerful jaws and large claws. They often have fur and thicker skin so a cat scratch can be less damaging.

This is why they are so curious. They need to inspect and check everything that comes into the home to make sure there is no danger to them and ensure their own safety, whether it’s a new sofa or a parcel through the door.

Or they may just be greedy buggers.

Or maybe just a bit thick. Like Mithril. 🤣
