Why is my cat so hungry all the time?

We have a 6 year old rescue Tom cat. He was ill about a year ago and we thought he was going to have to be put down. Miraculously, he recovered. After him bring so ill, we were so happy when he ate. It was very hard to get him to eat much at all, . As a result, we allowed him to eat whenever he wanted. Roll forward a year, and he'd eat 8 sachets of Whiskas a day if we'd let him. The Whiskas box recommends 4 sachets of cat food a day for a cat of his size. However, our cat is constantly begging for food and he appears insatiable. It's like he's got Prader Will syndrome.
Can anyone give me any ideas why he is insatiable all the time? He has had treatment for worms and fleas 5 week ago, so due the next treatment.

My first thought was worms.
Thyroid issues maybe, or you’ve just trained him to know that if he meows relentlessly you’ll give him a pouch, so he keeps doing it….to get you to give him a pouch!
Mind you whiskas shrank the size of their pouches from 100g to 85g iirc, so he will be wanting more. maybe some better quality food (not judging, I’ve got a rescue cat who will only eat whiskas!) with a higher meat content, he might feel more satisfied? Does he have biscuits down at all? Mine is eating a bit more as it’s colder so seems to be putting fat on for winter.

Hyperthyroid would be my guess.

Get his thyroid checked. I've had 2 with hyperthyroidism. Easily treated with meds

Hyperthyroidism or worms - are you using proper prescription worm treatment for him?

PampassGrass56 · 15/11/2023 07:44

Thank you all for this advice. I am going to book appointment at the vets to get next worm treatment and get his thyroid checked.
Also, which cat foods are higher meat content than Whiskas?

Oh, in answer to the question about dried food, I don't currently put any down as he is not enthusiastic about it. I could get some though.

My cat has diabetes and is insatiably hungry until her insulin kicks in. Might be worth suggesting to the vet? Unlikely though as he'd probably be very ill untreated, my guess would be thyroid.
