Cat suddenly prefers drinking out the bath

We've had our rescue cat for about 7 years (adopted as an adult so likely 10 ish now) and he's developed thyroid issues in the last year or so, but these now seem well controlled by his medicine and he otherwise seems well. Recently we've noticed he's been drinking from the water droplets in the bath after we've showered in preference to his water bowl. It goes without saying that water is fresh and the bowl clean. I'm not sure whether this should concern us or whether it's just a new fad (in which case maybe we should just buy a china bowl for his water to see if he likes it better than the metal one he has. I looked at cat water fountains but they all seem to be plastic - and expensive!) Since the repeated blood tests for his thyroid issues he loathes vet visits and gets very stressed so we prefer to avoid them unless absolutely necessary.

Thats cats for you

It's just what cats do, I think. Ours drinks from the sink, puddles, the water reservoir for the Christmas tree, people's glasses - even though she has of course fresh water in her bowl at all times.

My rescue cat would lurk outside the shower for me to finish so he could nip in. (He was black, sitting on a black bath mat and I'm very short sighted so I was very surprised the first few times!)

We compromised with me putting a shallow brown ceramic bowl of fresh water in the shower. (Me thinking that shallow and brown somehow mimmicks a puddle...)

Try a mug or a glass placed around the house. Mine adore that. They have a fountain that they like as well.

Cats are gonna cat Grin

Mine likes to splash his water from his bowl all over the floor and lick it up, or lick the drops out of the sink. I wouldn't worry!

Thanks all! Reassuring to hear it's probably just a new quirk not a concern. His predecessor never drank out a bowl in his life, much preferring a puddle, but this one used to like his drinking bowl. Who knows why that's changed! They do like to keep us on our toes don't they?

Mine will only drink water out of a protein shaker placed in the shower tray upstairs. If I put the same protein shaker near his food in the kitchen, he ignores it. Cats doing catting.

It's probably because the chlorine in the bath water has evaporated in the steam, whereas the cold water won't create a means for the chlorine to revert to its natural gaseous state.
