I’d like some advice on out cat’s weight gain please.
We got our 7yo female cat when she was almost 3 from a rescue centre. She was a bit portly at 4.7kg when we got her (weight is on the paperwork) but ever since she slims right down in summer to normal weight but then from autumn to spring her weight climbs to to 6kg (weighed at vets). She is a medium-size frame so she looks very chubby.
The main difference is that when the weather is good she is out exploring all day, whereas when the weather cools down/rains she sleeps most of the time.
She has Royal Canin Light biscuits on the vet’s advice, and half a Whiskas pouch daily (biscuits calculated to take into account the pouch). The reason for the wet food is that she loves it, and RC wet is too expensive.
She loves to play so the vet said to encourage that. She doesn’t get treats and may have a tablespoon of tuna every few weeks.
She’s always been in perfect health aside from being diagnosed with a heart murmur at the rescue, but our vets have never been able to find it since (we now think it was stress-induced as she was at the rescue for 6 weeks).
What else can we do? The vet said some cats just yo-yo with their weight, but she’s getting older and the excess weight may cause arthritis etc.
