Kitten drank some tea

Stupid question but is it safe for cats to drink a few sips of tea? He’s only a kitten. We are worried he’s not drinking despite a water fountain and bowls of water. We’ve put water in his wet food, but he sniffs the water doesn’t drink. However he lapped at a lukewarm cuppa and I’m glad he’s taken liquid but not sure caffeine is good for him.

Our daughter’s already hyper kitten always tries to drink my Coffee 😸, succeeds sometimes. No harm done.

Ours much prefer to drink from puddles (dirtier the better, apparently). Next time it rains, put a little bowl out and see if your kitty will drink rainwater.

i love the idea of a kitten drinking tea! Very Beatrix Potter.

itsmylife7 · 30/10/2023 11:25

Can I just say he is absolutely gorgeous. 😍

Our now late cat was caught drinking baileys Grin

They like creamy things

Late cat stuck his head into my G&T. Told him to buy his own.

When we are drinking wine or beer from glasses that don’t go in the dishwasher, we fill them with water and stand them beside the sink till we are washing up. 2 of our cats greatly prefer this to their own water. They also prefer manky puddles.

Helenahandkart · 30/10/2023 11:57

My cat is always drinking tea. She loves it. We have to put covers on our cups.

However, it isn’t good for cats, so try to avoid it.
As a one off it won’t harm your cat though.

LostCats · 30/10/2023 12:08

I’m so glad the manky puddles isn’t just my cat. I’ve always been a bit worried. He also prefers to lick rain water off the leaves in the garden. We call it wild drinking

LilacpointMummy · 30/10/2023 13:01

My DD's late cat would only drink water from the rusty access hole covering in her garden.

If it was dry, she had to pour water from a jug onto it for him!

GerbilMum26 · 30/10/2023 18:40

My kitten likes to drink the dregs of my cuppas. But since I drink decaf with oat milk. I’m honestly not bothered about it.

@MrsSebastianStan - he’s adorable - I am very fond of a grey kitten though
Finlay is 14 weeks

Try some stagnant rain water but make sure all the neighbours are watching while he's watching it. He'll be fine

MrsSebastianStan · 30/10/2023 22:20

@JaceLancs what a beautiful kitten!
thanks everyone for the stories, I guess if mine sticks to tea I’m lucky….

@Helenahandkart i can see us having to get those too. He’s so small it wouldn’t take much to overload him. Although as he has only two modes, asleep or wee grey blur it would be hard to spot a caffeine spurt.

One of ours loves beer and yoghurt, and he drinks out of the sink - completely ignoring the posh water fountain with filters....

CherryMyBrandy · 30/10/2023 22:55

Our cat loves a cold cup of tea! Leave your tea anywhere and she is in it! We have milk in our tea but it doesn't seem to have affected her at all, so imagine there's not enough milk to cause an issue.

Hughs · 30/10/2023 23:02

It might be the mug he likes - we always have two mugs of water on the dining table as ours both prefer drinking from a mug or a glass. They drink loads more since we started doing that, and go after our drinks less too. We stopped bothering with a fountain because the bloody dog would slurp it all up in seconds and I'd spend all day refilling it.

Cats won't drink water near their food. So of they're close together put them on apposite side of room or in a different place. My cat drinks quite a lot since I split the location of each bowl

My cat loves a cup of tea, I can't put my mug down and leave it because she's straight in and starts drinking. She seems fine on it.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 31/10/2023 08:17

Loving the grey kitten pictures 😁

Helenahandkart · 31/10/2023 09:50

Everyone’s saying it’s fine for cats to drink tea, but it’s not good for them. Google it.
Try to stop them if you can.
We put random objects (remote controls, bits of paper, glasses cases) across our teacups once they cool down enough to interest the cat.

Our cat is also obsessed with Coke.

@LadyLolaRuben my cats drink water right next to their food bowls.
