My boy has crossed the rainbow bridge

My beautiful cat has passed away, I'm heartbroken, more upset than I thought I'd be. He was 19 and was the best cat ever. So cuddly and happy. I've had him since a kitten.
There was no real sign of him being ill. He was getting slower and a bit skinnier, but still eating well the day before.
I just found him gasping, I stroked him and he just stopped breathing 😭
I feel so guilty that I missed something was wrong. Miss him so much but glad I was there at his end.

I am so sorry, journey well little boy 🌈

reallyworriedjobhunter · 29/10/2023 20:55

I'm so sorry. What was his name? Would you like to tell us more about him?

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 21:24

Oh @AntiquePancakes , I do so feel for you. It sounds like your dear boy could not have been more loved or had a better life. What a fine old age he was. Right up to the end he was enjoying his food and your cuddles in his wonderful home and who could wish for more for him. You will have so many happy memories of the lovely times you spent together and I hope these bring you comfort at this sad time.

AntiquePancakes · 29/10/2023 21:29

Thankyou, he's been cremated and I will pick him up this week😔
He should be sat on my lap tonight.
I wonder if he had a stroke or something, I can't stop wondering.
I've honestly not been this upset when a human has passed🤷‍♀️

So sorry to hear about your boy. 19 is an amazing age and hopefully when the pain passes a little, you will see that this is a good way for an elderly cat to pass.
You didn't notice anything as likely not much to see.
It is the worst part of being owned by a furry overlord.
Be kind to yourself. ❤️

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 21:38

Our pets take up such a big place in our hearts and are often our most constant companions. All those routines you shared intertwine you from the moment you wake up until bedtime. That's why the loss is so hard to bear and you're absolutely not alone in feeling a greater pain at the loss of a dearly loved pet than a human. It does get easier bit by bit I promise you.

megacat · 29/10/2023 21:51

The death of a cat hurts like no other. I also have never cried for a human like I did for my boy. He was taken on the road, alone, far, far too early. Please take comfort that he led a happy life and it ended in his home being stroked by you. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know how it hurts ❤️

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/10/2023 21:55

Animals can hide illness well
Yes at 19 he'd be slowing up and older cats do lose condition ,

It was his "time" and as you say you were honoured to be with him at the end .
<hugs>

vipersnest1 · 29/10/2023 22:00

I'm so sorry, @AntiquePancakes. If it's any comfort at all, it sounds like he had a good passing - you were there by his side, soothing him. No-one ever feels ready to let their pet go, even if it's planned due to ill health. The hole they leave in your heart is still just the same, either way. Flowers

Startyabastard · 29/10/2023 22:04

Cats are very, very good at not showing their illness and vulnerabilities.
Don't blame yourself, love, you couldn't have known.
I was heartbroken when the best choice was to have my dear black cat put down.... devastated, still am.
Just remember, not that you could have helped it either way, that you were with him in his last moments and his last image was your face.
I hope this comforts you, I know how hard this is.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 29/10/2023 22:05

@AntiquePancakes I'm sorry, it hurts so much when they die. Your lovely boy was 19, that's a good age, he had a lovely long life with you. It's never long enough for us, but dying at home, with their humans of old age while being stroked has to be the best way out of this life for them!

you didn't necessarily 'miss' anything, just sounds like a natural old age passing.

Try to focus on the wonder 19 years you had together 😻

thebear1 · 29/10/2023 22:06

I hope you can take comfort from the knowledge you surrounded him with love.

AntiquePancakes · 29/10/2023 22:30

@megacat that's so sad, I'm sorry you lost your boy in that way💕

Sorry to everyone who has lost their fur babies, it hurts doesn't it?😒

@AntiquePancakes so sorry he was very lovely.
Losing them is so very hard. Three years on I still say goodnight to my little girl who crossed the rainbow bridge. Sending you a hug he had a great life of that I am sure. 🌈💫❤️

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/10/2023 22:40

I love his 'tasche like Freddie Mercury !

You do know he'll be tutting at you for posting a photo of him surrounded by feathers

"Nought to do with me , no, they were here on the lawn when I sat down"

AntiquePancakes · 29/10/2023 22:48

@70isaLimitNotaTarget He had lovely markings,
I didn't see the feathers😬 that was in his misspent youth, was probably a pigeon 🤦‍♀️
