Wandering Cats

If you have a wanderer, have you ever thought of a way of tracking her? Mine is small, and she doesn't wear a collar, and all the camera type things I've seen are too big and heavy. I am completely consumed with curiosity to know where she goes! I don't THINK she's two timing because we know the people in all the houses round about-and she comes home smelling of outdoors, not someone else's house.

Forgive me for jumping in on your thread but I am interested to see if anyone has any suggestions!

We looked into it but, like you, found all the options looked bulky, were expensive and some required a subscription on top, the Apple Air Tag seemed an option but only good from what I can see in an urban area.

GPS or radio signal both had drawbacks, our conclusion was the technology is not there yet!

Mine has a Tractive tracker. It isn't as big as you think and doesn't seem to bother him.

The tracker doesn't totally help as while it's nice to know where he is, I currently know he's messing about in a field instead of coming home for dinner.

@AnnaMagnani Oh, I thought that looked huge! Glad to know it isn't. How long does the battery last?

@CassandraCross welcome! Yes I think the air tags have quite a limited range.

I have Tractive and they're fine wearing the collars. It's very interesting seeing their patrol routes!

The new models are a bit smaller than the one I have. My cat is not massive but sounds a lot bigger than yours about 6kg. But I've put it on his 4kg friend and it wasn't too big although she was furious.

Battery lasts about 4-5 days if you aren't forever trying to track a bastard cat live who is hanging about a garden centre.

@CassandraCross you're right about the tech not being there yet. Tractive is not bad, but imagine a world where you can track them anywhere via their microchips! I wait in hope.

That's exactly what we said, why can't their chip double up as a tracking device that would be so much better, although I sometimes wonder if I really want to know where they go ignorance may be bliss!

CurlewKate · 10/10/2023 21:58

Imagining having to plug your cat in somewhere to change their microchip!

Ah, hadn't considered that😁CurlewKate
