How far can a car safely fall?

One of our cats has fallen from a bedroom window tonight.

She is just a kitten, seven months old. The window was open because so warm and she must have been taken unaware, chasing a fly or something, and bam, off the edge. Son witnessed.

She ran back into the house afterwards and SEEMS okay and not resisting being touched or lifted.

The height is about twenty feet from sill to yard.

I know cats can take a bit of a fall but should I get her checked by the vet tomorrow just in case?

That of course should say 'CAT' in the title!!!

Cats can fall quite a way without injuring themselves as long as they land the right way up. One of ours fell out of a first floor window once and was absolutely fine but I'd still get her checked out at the vets tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

She's just eaten and run up the stairs very easily to the same room where it happened & has jumped on the bed, seems perfectly okay. Quite lucky I guess.

Quite a way but I would probably get her checked over for peace of mind as cats are excellent at hiding pain.

One of ours fell out of the upstairs bathroom window when she was a bit older, we took her to the emergency vet as she was acting really strangely, kind of creeping round the house and suddenly terrified of us. She had an anti inflammatory injection and was absolutely fine behaviour wise by the time we'd driven to the vets, eye roll! But as PP say, I would take her for a check up.

When I was a child I lived in a high rise block of flats.
My cat fell off the balcony and landed on the ground 7 stories down.
He was fine. Just bruised his nose.

It was quite miraculous.

Mine fell out the upstairs window he was overweight so I was worried all that fat falling would hurt him he sat there waiting for me to run downstairs and pick him up and when he got in he acted normally I rang the vets they said he should be fine and he was

Good cushioning @Theunamedcat ! 😁

I have heard about cats surviving falls from tower blocks before- apparently they have a better chance of surviving the higher it is? I don't really understand the physics but it's got something to do with velocity and distance!

The speculation is that once the cat reaches terminal velocity (within about 6-7 storeys), they can just "relax" and prepare for the landing. That doesn't mean they can't sustain injuries though - google "high-rise syndrome" !
