Keeping the cat in

We have 2 cats, they are 1 year old. had them since they were kittens , moved house in May and kept them in for a few weeks then got a cat flap and let them come and go as they please.

One is a real home cat, always here, never goes far. The other is never seen! He does come back every day but only to be fed and then he's straight back out.

He's out all night and day! And this is fine but I'm worried he's going into other people's homes. He is really friendly, will approach anyone on the street and someone on the street told me he's tried following them in to the house.

It's been raining all night and day here yet he's been out the whole time!

So I decided to lock the cat flap tonight when he came in... he's sat at it for an hour or so then wandered about the house, coming up to the bed for his old sleeping spot and now he's snuggled up on my knee.

Am I being unfair?! What would you do?

My cats have been indoor only for many years. I suspect the culture in Australia is different, we're supposed to keep them indoors (and it's easier to do so since our windows are all fitted with permanent flyscreens). I would never again let my cats roam, it's too dangerous for them and for the local wildlife.

It's not mean to keep him in at night, but if the reasoning is that he's friendly and going into other people's homes - surely that's more likely to happen during the day when people are awake and have their doors and windows open?

Most cats get killed overnight dusk/dawn I always kept my indoor/outdoor cats in at those times they were fine with this

One of mine got stuck in someone's house, since then he's worn a tracker
