How to stop deaf cat biting

Hiya DD has recently rehomed a cat from a rescue, and we've discovered he's a biter. It seems to be an affectionate bite, he'll do it and then throw himself on your lap for cuddles.

The problem is he's deaf - so whereas if it were one of my cats I'd be clapping or shouting "no" to make sure he stopped, that has absolutely no affect on him.

We plan to try to reinforce good behaviour with treats, but any suggestions on how to stop the bad?

Thanks

I had a biter and shouting/clapping didn't work anyway, it just made him agitated (but obviously they are all different).

What did work was to immediately pick him up, remove him from the room and close the door, and so deprive him of my company for a few minutes. I only had to do that half a dozen times and he got the message and never bit again.
