Cat allergic to fleas?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 23/09/2023 13:18

My DCat (9) has had fleas recently and been treated for them. I brush her with a flea comb every day and she’ll have monthly flea treatments (vet said to do this).

However, I think she’s allergic either to the fleas or flea bites as she gets scabs which then come off gradually. A few come, scab over, fall off etc. Vet told me to bathe the bites/wounds with salt water/antiseptic. They keep recurring though.

Anyone else had this with their cat?

Yes, we had a cat that was allergic. Bravecto flea treatment worked, and doing everything we could to stop him getting them, spraying the house etc too

One of ours is - gets really scabby if he catches them. We get monthly preventative flea treatment from the vets.

Yes my cat growing up had this and it was very uncomfortable for him. He lost patches of fur too. Can’t remember what the medicine was but we got something from the vet that really helped.

Yes. We had this and the only thing that prevented the fleas coming back was a flea collar.

Thanks all. She’s a cat who adopted me (all cleared with ex owners). But unsure when/how etc they flea treated her or if she reacted. Poor things though, scabs and wound get quite sore.

Our girl cat developed terrible Flea Allergy Dermatitis when she got bitten - she was all scabby and had bald patches, poor bugger. Vet treated her with a steroid injection and antibiotic and the recovery was amazingly quick. She has Bravecto Plus which is used every three months.

Yes my cat has a horrible reaction to fleas and ended up with a big bald patch ☹️ we changed the flea treatment we used and he's all healed up now

Just a word of caution - our cat was also allergic to his flea collar! Left him with a bald ring around his neck and irritated skin. I don’t know if being allergic to flea bites was an indication of him being prone to allergies generally, or if he was just very unlucky. But if you use one, do check often that the collar isn’t causing any issues
