Two stage dental?

So miss Penelope unexpectedly turns out to have really bad teeth. (She's a new arrival as foster to adopt from a rescue. So I don't get flamed for not hovering the back story!)

Vet wants to do examination and x rays the first time, then bring her back for extractions a couple of weeks later.
Rescue not happy with 3 anaesthetics in a short period. (Needs spaying as well) and I'm not either.
Has anyone heard of this.

No but I’d prioritise the dental if her teeth are bad.

My cats have both had to have teeth extracted (both strays rescued as kittens) and they examined and extracted whatever was needed under one GA. I wouldn't be happy with them having multiple if that's not needed - it's so stressful for them.
can you get a second opinion from another vet?

Could you ask for the X-rays to be done after the spay ?

SayingwhatIreallythink · 22/09/2023 21:29

The 2-step dental is supposed to be better as it means they aren’t anaesthetised for too long at a time.
I don’t personally do them unless the dental has gone on too long. But it’s not necessarily a bad thing to do.

I'll be getting her done at a different vet. As they are cheaper. That's what I did with my other two.

My parents cat recently had 10
Teeth out in one go, and my friends cat had 4. Dint think either had x rays.

This is a good idea.

it is best practice to take pre and post dental X-rays for extractions in cats.

X-rays are incredibly useful in small animal dentistry, it’s not just done to increase the price. In cats it is especially important.

Is 11 days between spay and dental enough? Just trying to sort out the logistics of getting it done.
