Why does my cat like me again?

For the entire summer one of my cats has been at best indifferent to me, if not openly hostile - walking away if I try to pet her etc. (Except when we're out the front of the house and she puts on a show for the neighbours of being the most loving sociable cat.) She hasn't had the hump with my daughter....

2 nights ago I got my first night time visit in ages. Now she's currently curled up on my lap.

Why the change? What goes through their little heads?

Winter is coming and they want to be warm and sheltered.

Mumdiva99 · 17/09/2023 10:49

I'd agree with that if it was just a night time sleep spot.

But the lap thing. She's obviously forgiven me for some imagined slight....

Or maybe it's the 3 days of dreamy treats I gave.....

Could you be pregnant? Cats sense it and get more affectionate, I'm told.

Mumdiva99 · 17/09/2023 11:18

Thanks for the laugh....but no. definitely not pg. I'm more likely to be in menopause....

Our cat is actually my son's. Aquired when DS was 11 and he's now 25 and left home. The cat was never friendly or affectionate, never sat on anyone's lap. I used to feel bad for DS that the pet he loved never gave anything back. In fact his default was to bite or scratch.
Then two years ago after a week in the cattery he had been to many times before he got home and leapt on DHs knee. Since then he jumps onboard everytime DH sits down. I'd love to know what goes through his tiny brain!

Papergirl1968 · 17/09/2023 11:32

Hope I didn't upset you. I know pregnancy can be a sensitive subject.
In that case, yes, I'd agree kitty is just buttering you up for winter.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 17/09/2023 11:47

The temperature has dropped.
DC spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening on my knee. Somewhere she hasnt been since about March!

Mumdiva99 · 17/09/2023 12:04

@Papergirl1968 - absolutely no upset. (I genuinely just giggled at the thought)

@thecatlikesmebest - is your user name still accurate or does your dh deserve that title!!
@FallingAutumnLeaf that's probably it.....nothing to do with me....all for her benefit.

Why is my cat affectionate upstairs only?! Downstairs or outside she won't even let me stroke her. It's like she's at work when we're downstairs & she finds my attitude highly unprofessional.

Isheabastard · 17/09/2023 12:10

Cats have a higher body temperature than humans.

If you haven’t turned on your heating yet, then your lap is the warmest thing in the house at the mo.

Mumdiva99 · 17/09/2023 12:31

Heating....in September!!! No definitely not on.

@SlippinJanie aren't they peculiar. Out the front mine is like a social butterfly. Back garden nothing.

Is this the tortie by any chance? I think they're kind of known for their prickly personalities. Ours can be all super cuddly one minute and then bopping you around the head for some imagined slight the next. She's always forgiven for her grumpiness though, because the rest of the time she's so adorable. As are your two, what a lovely photo!

Honeyroar · 17/09/2023 12:59

We always say we can tell it’s autumn when our cats start getting on again! They barely acknowledge each other all summer.

Oh my! Ours is exactly like this too.
She's a different personality upstairs and loves strokes, purrs etc.
Downstairs she just wants to play.
She won't ever settle downstairs for a proper sleep either.

Haha, one of ours is like this with DH. He avoids him completely downstairs, but will nap curled up next to him for hours upstairs, demanding belly rubs and kisses Hmm

They are weird creatures!

😂 same, my boy loves a cuddle on the toilet. On the sofa definitely not.

Could it be other hormones then? I'm offering this as a possibility but more likely the cat is just being cuddly
