I've really had enough

We've had our lovely cat for about 8 years. She's a dream. However over the last 18 months I've become increasingly allergic to her. I'm asthmatic and now on inhalers all the time, I wasn't before. My eyes are itchy and inflamed all thr time, they look constantly puffy.

I've tried the dander spray, lots of hoovering - nothing works. I'm so fed up of feeling poorly.

I am also allergic to cats and can't stroke them or be close to them or my eyes get all puffy. It annoys me when people say "oh you don't like cats" when I tell them not to sit on my lap (which they generally try to do at friends houses because I'm the only one sitting quietly not reacting to them!) because I actually do, I just can't be around them.

I think you know the answer but it's a hard one. You need to try to rehome your cat, preferably with family or friends.

Beamur · 15/09/2023 07:32

There was a similar thread a few days ago and someone recommended a food that can help. It's something in their saliva that most people react to. This food can alter that - worth a try?
Otherwise I think severe allergy is a good reason for rehoming however that's really tough for you. If you do that, see if a reputable rescue will help.

It’s your immune system that’s the issue not the cat.

Have you tried a low histamine diet? It can be really effective.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 15/09/2023 08:50

Yes I've tried a change in diet and now taking Puriton every day. My eyes are constantly swollen

@DueyCheatemAndHow try some turmeric and omega 3 (vitabiotics have good ones)

this is how DS is fighting allergies and works a treat (he’s on high dose though)

WanderingWitches · 15/09/2023 09:01

I'm a huge cat lover and currently have 4 but I really don't think the answer is medicating yourself to cope. Its unfair on you.
I personally think you should try and rehome. Would a family member take her?

CurlewKate · 15/09/2023 09:26

It is absolutely fine to rehome animals. Don't listen to anyone who tries to guilt trip you about this.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 15/09/2023 10:31

I feel terrible but at the same time I'm so miserable waking up with this everyday.

There are two people who might, I can sound them out.

Try not to feel terrible @DueyCheatemAndHow

Its not your fault and the cat will adapt to a new home as long as it’s a good home.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 15/09/2023 10:46

I'll try family and friends. She's such a good cat, she really is, but i dread cuddling her.

Honestly, just rehome her. It's madness that people are saying anything else.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/09/2023 11:39

However over the last 18 months I've become increasingly allergic to her.
So what has changed? Different food, treats? Different laundry products? Different worming or flea tablets? Are you on different meds? Is anyone brushing her?

It's a shame to let her go without figuring out the cause but definitely do try to find a friend or relative who might take her on as they will already know her.

How heartbreaking 😥

DueyCheatemAndHow · 15/09/2023 13:17

Nothing has changed. I've tried the dander spray which isn't making a difference. I can only assume bmny tolerance has become lower and lower

BCSurvivor · 15/09/2023 13:19

I agree, re rehoming.
BUT please please don't offer her for free on Facebook or any other selling site.
If a friend or family member can't take her, please take her to Cats Protection for rehoming.

snowstorm2012 · 15/09/2023 13:25

Hi, maybe try this - I used it on our cat and it really helped. We also have an air purifier which is great - it seems to keep my cat allergy at bay 👍🏼

I've really had enough
DueyCheatemAndHow · 15/09/2023 14:29

Tried that spray

God over my dead body would she go on Facebook.
