Kitten biting and scratching/ pouncing on me

Hi all !
We have adopted a kitten little ginger boy last week he is 9.5 weeks old .
He's absolutely gorgeous but he is constantly biting and grabbing me / pouncing on me . Do they grow out of this ?
I know he's probably only playing but it really hurts 🤣
I do tell him no everytime he does it and he has plenty of toys . It's just not very enjoyable at the moment!!

Thank you for any advice x

It will last months in my experience. This is why everyone recommends two kittens Grin

Kittens play together with lots of soft biting. Even my adult cats use some light biting in their play.

when the kitten bites, stop playing. After a minute offer play in a more positive way. Basically just the same as a toddler.

Normal and will last a few months! Especially for a ginger kitten. They are so lovely though

Darthwazette · 14/09/2023 14:10

My kittens are 6.5 months and are still wild. They tend to attack each other rather than me though. They look so vicious!

Beamur · 14/09/2023 14:24

They do grow out of it. But it might be a while yet.
Don't play with your hands (tempting though it is) use wand toys, divert to kickeroos, remove hand (if you can) and stop playing if he's getting over stimulated.
He is just playing but you need to divert that energy away from your skin.

Thank you everyone x

They do stop eventually, neutering helps when he’s old enough. The best toys squeal in pain when you pounce on them.

IncompleteSenten · 15/09/2023 08:09

Kids play. You need to play more with him. He has a lot of energy he needs to run off

Does he have enough toys? Catnip ones, ones that move so he can play by himself and ones you move so you are playing with him?

Also - where's the cat tax picture?

Nannyfannybanny · 15/09/2023 08:12

Yes normal, same with puppies (got one of them) definitely need a picture, had 2 ginger rescues.

No help here Blush I've never had a kitten in my life .
Thankfully ours (adults) aren't bitey as a rule (she will waltz over and grab a piece of skin but its a toothy hold rather than a bite )

Pictures of the Red Devil ?

easy, just get another kitten😜we had siblings and until six months they spent most of the day jumping on one another and fighting. It was hugely entertaining. Then they’d groom one another and go to sleep in the yin-yang formation. Another upside is you will thereby own double the amount of kittens you currently do.

if that’s not an option what I found worked was going OW OW OW in a high pitched voice, that invariably made the boy kitten stop biting me. Girl kitten, however, seemed to like it, lil sadist🤣

HohiyiKozbevi · 15/09/2023 08:36

Kittens need other kittens for precisely this reason. They have to have another kitten buddy because that's the only way they learn to play nicely because claws hurt - after a bit of rough-and-tumble with other kittens they work out that its better to play with claws sheathed and bites gentle.

Playing is an important part of learning to be a cat, so the best thing to do is get a 2nd kitten of similar age immediately.

Ostryga · 15/09/2023 09:06

I also recommend a second kitten if you can find one of a similar age. They will play fight for months and months yet. It will save your sanity if you redirect it to another little playmate.

Foggyfoggyfoggy · 15/09/2023 09:09

Def needs a playmate. Costs aren't as high with 2 as replacing soft furnishings and skin grafts..

honeybee1986 · 15/09/2023 11:35

Here he is ! We do play with him lots and he has loads of toys , wand toys that we try to wear him out with also.

Thanks for all your advice , I'll have a look in to getting him a play mate 😬

Running up and down the stairs games tire them out. Wand toys are good for that so he is the only one running up and down the stairs.

He is a beautiful little chap.

Clarich007 · 05/10/2023 13:01

Wow, gorgeous I just want to kiss that little face
I agree about having 2 kittens Then they can practice the biting on each other. By😹
