Kitten food

Hi,
We have adopted 2 female kittens that are around 6 months old.
They have come with whiskers dry and wet food.
one only eats the dry food but the devil picks only picks certain shapes out and the other eats all the wet food. They have had chicken too.

My lovely 2 previous cats were on prescription food for so long that I can’t remember what I did before that.

What dried food is recommended and do you need to feed wet food too, or is just dry ok?

I only gave dry before as it was prescription and I had them for nearly 19 years so didn’t seem to harm.

They seem so small and vulnerable and after such a horrible start in life I want to make sure I am doing my very best for them in every way.

I have lots more questions (dogs, fleas, socialising…..) but I will feel more confident I think, if I know they are been fed the best start 😊

Thank you!

Arden grange do a high quality kitten food.

We’ve just adopted a kitten (4/5 months) so far we’ve been doing 2 bowls of wet food that he eats about half of and 2 bowls of dry food which he eats all of.

im not sure if that’s right either be he seems happy with it.

I feed our now 8 month old 3 pouches of blink wet food and he has dry down all the time. He was having Wiskers dry but after being castrated he was constantly wanting food so he's now trialing some dry for neutered cats.

Thank you.
mine seem desperate for food all the time! The smaller one will grab my hand to put the bowls down but then picks out the bits she likes! Can’t blame her I suppose 😆

Are you keeping your kitten in the one room? I have let mine have a little wander around but with it so hot and the windows open it worries me. They stay in one room at night.

The dog at the moment is petrified of them! They don’t seem phased yet but the one did run when he was barking to go out.
They are very interested in each others food.

I really hope they all become friends but it doesn’t feel like that at the moment.

I want to enjoy it but I’m on edge all the time at the moment. I have hardly slept the few nights.

The dog is 3 and did live with my previous cat but he was much older and much less unpredictable than these crazy pair. Who should be like they are and be able to be kittens and enjoy themselves.

I worry about the heat too and been in the one room 🙄drive myself mad. But keep telling myself they are in a better place than they were

We kept him in 1 room for 72hr and now he has the run of the house almost. We don’t let him in the utility room or bathrooms. He sleeps in his ‘safe room’.

the heat doesn’t seem to be bothering him too much. We do have a couple of ‘cool rooms’ where he could go.

I’ve actually found the house stays quite cool if I let cool air in early in the morning and then shut and blind the windows.

Kittens are eating machines, mine had 300g of wet a day.

Ideally you feed wet food as it's their main water intake.

The shapes/chunks/jelly are for your benefit not the cats.

When I had a fussy cat who picked off the jelly we went back to old fashioned pate style in tins. Cat had no option but to eat properly and we've stuck with this ever since.

Think I fed my kittens Feringa.

Twizbe · 09/09/2023 16:32

Oh our cat tends to eat the jelly rather than the chunks. Should we move him to a pate style then?

perhaps a stupid question but can you mix brands of wet and dry food?

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 09/09/2023 17:00

You can mix brands. Sometimes licking jelly means they don’t like the meat bit.

Twizbe · 09/09/2023 17:13

Ah, ok, good to know. I’ll get him something else. I didn’t ask at the rescue what they fed them and when we went to get stuff they only had whiskers kitten food.

He loves the dry food though.

Thank you for all information and tips.
I am going to go cat food shopping tomorrow.
And try again with introductions with the dog.

Any tips on introductions gratefully received 😊
