Kitten smells

I just got our first pet, a kitten. She is 12 weeks old and is doing well with the litter tray, sleeping, playing, eating fine etc. But she has a smelly bum. Is this something she will get better with over time (is she just inexperienced in fully cleaning herself) or is it something to worry about? It just smells like poo.

Heyyyy :) Congrats on your kitty.
At a guess yeh, she is probably used to mom cleaning her and not clicked on that she has to clean herself now. This should come with time.
Although, if you notice anything there, you can just use some wet paper towels to give her a little wipe, this may help stimulate her to do it herself.

I'm afraid I can't possibly comment until you pay the cat tax with a photo ! 😹😁

Just get some tushy wipes (yes, they are actually called that!) Kittens can be a bit rubbish at bum cleaning, and can get diarrhoea if you've changed their diet. You can use the tushy wipes to help until she grows - she is only a baby! She will probably be fine in a few months.

Tushy wipes 😹🤣

What's her diet like and is she pooing normally? It should be well formed and not leave any residue around their bum area.

But saying that, cats don't wipe their arses so a smell of poo straight after using the toilet is fairly normal.

I would get her checked at the vets. Mine had a smelly bum and it was a problem with her glands in her bum. She needed the vet to manually squeeze them to get rid of the smell. It was a recurring issue that required regular vet visits to sort it. It might not be that, but maybe check and see.
