I have a 14 year old cat who is in gtlreaf health the vet said. Apart from demanding food when I go in the kitchen or doing something or on the phone she will come and meow very loudly 😂

Is it just because I have a black cat that I notice them or are there disproportionately more senior black cats?

Icabod · 02/09/2023 11:44

Here is my lovely girl 16 and a half, she has always been petite, still mousing but she has caught fewer birds in the last year. She has always been very rowdy. She still loves sunbathing and still sometimes zooms about. She has stage two kidney disease but it's managed. She came from Battersea as a kitten amd has always loved human food, we've had to clamp down on that because of her kidney disease but if she had it her way she would eat curry and poached salmon every day.

Gorgeous very senior cats. @TerfTalking our two are like twins with diamonds on their noses.

Speckledy · 02/09/2023 11:55

@Icabod she's beautiful

I actually read something about black cats being very hardy creatures, so maybe your theory is true.

One of my friend's started a cat rescue in the US, and it is really sad how many older cats end up with her because their owners don't want them anymore. 😢

I'm not denying it's hard work sometimes, especially when mine has periods of peeing indoors wherever/whenever is most upsetting or inconvenient but I can't imagine actually giving him up.

They are! It’s like looking at my Maggie!

My beautiful old lady is about 23. She was abandoned by my neighbour when she was approx 11/12 so has lived a 2nd life with us and still going strong!

Ah love this thread - gorgeous cats!

We have a 15yr old female who has now out-lived 3 feline companions... she's nicknamed the bionic cat. She rarely goes out, spent her entire life hiding under furniture or under bedcovers. Will chase foxes and the local boy cats out the garden if she spots them but won't chase mice or spiders. Always gets a lick of the plate, loves wotsits, popcorn, anything really. Picture of good health according to the vet - she only goes for her yearly jabs! She had 2 ingrown claws last week and that was the first non routine appt in 6 years!

Has utter distain for our 4 year old so only emerges after 7.30pm for cuddles. Wakes me up at 5am for more cuddles by deliberately knocking everything off the bedside table. Will miss her hugely when the time comes as we've had her since she was a kitten, but at this rate she's probably got another 5 years in her!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2023 17:26

Just went to renew cheddar's insurance and it's gone up by £25 a month!! She's never had any claims. Err no. Managed to negotiate a 15% discount.

DontCallMeBaby · 05/09/2023 17:40

No claims @Toddlerteaplease?! What is this witchcraft?!

The cruciate ligament injury surgery about 8 years ago wiped out the insurance premiums, and then some, for BOTH cats up to that date. And diabetic boy’s insurance has been pretty good value over the last couple of years (esp the TWO nights at the emergency vet).

In fact I’d been wondering how pet insurers even stay afloat, and the answer is clearly Cheddar 😀

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2023 17:43

@DontCallMeBaby the other two ran up claims of £24k so it's just luck!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2023 17:44

I'm surprised magic and Maia didn't wipe them out.

Gettingbysomehow · 05/09/2023 17:53

My girl Isis aged 13 tabby and white and still very kittenish and Bluebell black and white sadly RIP at 21.

Oh that’s more like it @Toddlerteaplease!

The £4k annual limit looks increasingly squeaky these days. I have to sit them down every summer and tell them to please rein it in (renewal is mid august) 😂

Alsonification · 05/09/2023 18:33

Here's our little lady. Her name is Bambi. She's 11.5 years. Had her since she was 8 weeks old. She's always been a moody cat but she's deffo getting more cranky now lol. She still adores my son though. She also still hops in his window on the second floor so shes still as agile as ever. She just sleeps a lot more now and doesn't seem as interested in going outside.
