Cat really nervous and won’t come home

We (me, DH and one of the DDs) have just returned from 3 nights away. Older DD staying close by at my mum’s has been hanging out in the house and feeding the cat. We had a call on Friday a few hours after we’d left saying cat was hiding and had a cut on his ear (he’s a big boy but has had a few run ins with local cats where he has come off worse). I told DD not to worry and got our friend and neighbour to check there was no serious injury. Cat running around ok and eating but will now not come near us and is just approaching the house for food. This is out of character behaviour. He does go out as about but likes to greet us and is often close by when we are in.

No idea what to do as we wouldn’t be able to catch him for vet check. Is there anything we can do apart from leave food out and give him space? I’m worried he us injured and needs a vet.

Can you borrow a trap in order to get him to the vet? We borrowed one from a local RSPCA volunteer when ours went walkabout.

He may have a painful abscess that you can't see. This happened to me cat when he was bitten on the back leg. He was hiding in the house under my bed bless him. Definitely vets if you can catch him. Good luck!

Thanks. He did actually return and all loving and cuddly but his ear started smelling bad so off to the vets today. He has also been hiding a lot.
