How to ease litter tray transition from first room

We are getting ready for a rescue cat to join us soon and are just setting up the room they will start off in.

Eventually we want the litter tray to be in the utility room but for the first few days it needs to be in the cat’s safe room.

When we move it, how do we ensure they don’t keep using the corner of the starter room? I have read to try putting a couple of treats there to discourage them, would that work?

With my kittens, I moved the used tray to the hall outside their original room and placed each kitten in the tray. I then repeated the process until I got the tray where I wanted. It seemed to work!

Hi @SoupDragon Do you mean you moved it over a few days?

Yes. I think I moved it from living room to hall, hall to kitchen and then kitchen to utility room. It was in the living room (their first room) for about a week then a few days or so in each of the next positions.

I recently had to move the litter tray upstairs. I bought a second tray, so she had two to choose from. Kept the upstairs one cleaner. Waited impatiently until she decided to use the upstairs one for the first time - it took a couple of weeks - and then I whisked away the downstairs one and bleached the area. She accepted it.

I did similar. I put different litter in the downstairs tray which she much preferred so I left the upstairs tray in 'her' room with the unpopular litter and then removed it after it hadn't been used for a week or so.

We just moved the litter tray - never had any issues with accidents - they know where to go.
