One or two kittens?

I have a 6 yr old male cat. After two years of deliberating, I decided to get a kitten. Contacted rescue who had two bonded kittens. Would you just take them both or wait for a single kitten? How much harder would it be to have two?
I live in a small house so having lots of litter trays everywhere wouldnt be easy.

Why did you deliberate on getting a second cat?

Leedsmum27 · 05/08/2023 18:37

2 is so much easier . They will play with each other … and less likely to bother your older cat. I have twins (only thought I wanted one) but it’s been great .

Depends! I thought 2 kittens wouldn't bother my older cat. They do indeed play with each other but have united in making my older cat feel edged out in her own home!
What is your older boy like temperament wise? Does he get on with other cats?

My older cat gets on fine with other cats and pets. We had an older cat who died a couple of yrs back so thought about getting another since but waited until it felt right. But having 3 cats seems a lot from 1 and being a small house I worry it will smell much more too

2 kittens already bonded will play together and are less likely to disturb your older cat. You are so lucky if you get 2 little 😺😺.

Also would 2 mean they were less interested in humans and end up not so cuddly?

2! I lost count of the number of times I watched our duo rolling around the floor wrestling each other and thought ‘I’m glad I’m not involved in that’.

We had 1 lonely lonely dcat when his db died. We deliberately chose 1 dkitten.. It worked and they bonded very quickly.. If your dcat is happy in general get 2! I have always got pairs. This was a one off for dcat! We went with cpl who had a lone dkitten..

Get two!

GoodVibesHere · 05/08/2023 19:23

Everyone always says two but in my experience one has been absolutely fine. I mean I get that it must be fun seeing two play together but mine one had plenty of fun and was perfectly happy.

LookingForFreeDoughnuts · 05/08/2023 19:28

If you have the chance to get two, go for it. As an aside, I'm a cat slave to 4, and can recommend the Everclear litter brand, it keeps the smell to the minimum.

I adopted a nursing mother with 1 kitten, and it was great to have a bonded pair. The stress of a new home was much less for them, and they were lovely together. Not the same as 2 kittens of course, but a bonded pair is special.

Cocopogo · 05/08/2023 19:30

I use Everclean already, like the clumping!

Two. Always get two.

WarmBeerAndSandwiches · 05/08/2023 20:00

Definitely get two. My kitten is nearly a year old now and I have two older cats, they all get on really well but the kitten would definitely would have benefitted from having a playmate his own age and the other two would definitely have enjoyed a bit more peace. Grin

Two

Beamur · 05/08/2023 22:01

I have 3 cats - one litter tray. Older cat will never use a tray and the sisters are happy to share. Also they pee in the shower if they're upstairs and can't be bothered to go downstairs!
Spot clean a couple of times a day and full change every 2nd or 3rd day. I prefer a non clumping litter.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 05/08/2023 23:36

I always come on these threads and say two, but we recently got a solo boy kitten and he's developed the most amazing friendship with our 3yo male.

They adore each other and the 3yo is so much happier now he has a playmate - our 8yo grump just ignores the pair of them 😂

Oh gosh no. I had two litter mates, both boys and they both loved a cuddle.

And obviously we need photos! Grin
